Why do couples send out formal wedding invitations if they are already living together, have children, own a home and been together for years?

My thought too but there has to be more of reason. :)

Because everyone else does it so they think they should do it too.

well did the invatation happen to mention they were registerd anywhere so you can hae easy acess to a list of stuff they want :)

I'm sure there is more of a reason but my guess would be that is the main one not that there is any thing wrong with that :Graucho

Because they're entitled to the whole shabang just like anyone else is. :)

same reason they give away dumb little gifts to each guest that you eventually throw away
