Freesite builders: Does crap still sell?
 

Back in the old days, wisdom was this: Make your freesite look like crap, use small low-quality images. This will cause the surfer to click on your banners to go somewhere else rather than hanging around burning up your bandwidth.

Do you find that this is still the case?

for me.. crappy layouts and awesome content are the sellers. The crappier the layout the better.

Well, yes. :) I should have said "sponsor links" rather than banners.

Banners suck in the first place.

Then why do we have them in our sigs?!!

I've been hearing that for 6 years, I'm surprized they are not extinct yet. lol

Banners are only good for very targetted advertising.

using small images that force the surfer to join the site your pushing if he wants real content is ideal, however most link list sites won't list you unless your pics of a certain size, quality.
