The ten year ban on the sale of Assault Weapons

...will expire Monday and it is being reported that Congress will not renew the ban...even if the President urges that it be renewed...which he won't.

jawanda 09-09-2004 02:12 AM

Really? ... I heard that congress WOULD reinstate it IF the bushy asked them too.

Just what this country needs ....

And of couse an assult weapon can stopa car bomb or nuclear weapon

Terrorist are bad enough last thing I want is being in NY City when Al Queda attack again and 100,000 Dirty Harry wannabes that can't hit the broadside of a barn start shooting randomly.

The AWB was basically a social experiment that failed miserably.

I hope this lowers the price of the assault rifles that were listed under the ban, I really want a nice M-4 with some Beta C-mags. :thumbsup

yeah, they went from rifles to jet airliners, that fixed the problem.

why, are the people who wrote that bill still alive?

Sorta like the prohibition of MJ:stoned

I love guns. I have an impressive little arsenal. I don't believe most people should be able to go out and buy an "assault" rifle though.

There's nothing I'd hate to see more than a bunch of gang members with AR-15s or kids taking their Dad's Tec 9 to school to deal with a bully.

It's a useless ban anyway.. It's very misleading as a bill name.. Even with the Ban in place you can still legally buy a M4 or a AK47 or just about any other assault rifle. The ban simply changed the configuration you could buy them as.. For example on a M4 you couldn't have a folding stock and a short barrel (think it had to be atleast 12 inches) But you could have one or the other.

However if you wanted to bypass the whole law all you had to do was locate a lowe reciver which was dated pre ban and you could do almost what you wanted just not have it auto..

for example this is just on company of many tyou can legaly buy these kinds of firearms from.. ban or no ban http://www.armalite.com/sales/catalog/rifles.htm

Gunni 09-09-2004 07:57 AM

There is a reason they are called assault weapons!
They are designed with one thing in mind, and that is killing people, so allowing people to buy them is pretty stupid I think...

VeriSexy 09-09-2004 07:59 AM

Would be damn cool to own a AK-47 :ak47:

CE_BigB 09-09-2004 08:11 AM

I am an avid sportsman, hunter, recreation and competitive shooter. And I dont own any assault weapons. All my guns are hunting or competition pieces.

I doubt California will ever allow assault weapons again... Everytime it is even mentioned, the vision of the Hollywood Bank Robbery is envoked where heavy bodyarmoured robbers shot it up with the unprepared and outgunned police...

well.. that changed things forever around here...

no more assuault rifles... and
now the police are armed HEAVY !!!

The ban really does mean shit. Well, for gunowners who had "assault rifles" before the ban, well they made some good money. The cost of a pre-ban weapon today is considerably more than a post-ban "assault rifle."

The main thing the assault weapons ban did was this - prevent the "assault rifle" from having a magazine that holds more than 10 rounds and have a collapsible stock. There are more details to this, but they really aren't relevant.

Either way, you can still buy an "assault rifle" today if you dont mind spending $1000+ on the gun. These guns are referred to as "pre-ban."

The assault weapons ban was another one of those laws which really doesn't do a whole lot either way. Its enough to piss off gun owners, but at the same time it made some of them a lot of money.

beergood 09-09-2004 09:26 AM

Does that mean my AK, UZI and automatic handgun are legal now?

ANY gun is designed to kill.

but guns dont kill people....

death does.

Tom_PMs 09-09-2004 09:33 AM

During the debacle of the same sex marriage amendment debate in the senate is when I saw it come up. Two new york senators with the brains to know that that red-herring amendmant would lose, and the balls to say something, called on Bush to reinstate the ban on assault weapons.

Hillary Clinton and Charlse Schumer used their floor time to try to light a fire under Bushes butt to do the right thing and bring the expiring assault weapons ban into the spotlight instead of a lame religious-right amendment.

That is all.
