Senate Armed Sevices Committee and Abu Ghraib
I have been watching the Senate hearing on C-Span. Military Officers have already testified now the heads of the Independent Civilian investigation are testifying. Schlesinger has stated that the overwhelming majority of the prisoners in the infamous pics of abuse were not being prepped for interrogation as they were common criminals and were of no interest to interrogaters. He basically writes it off as those military personell involved in the abuse were "sadistic" in nature and in some instances were using misguided technics for disipline like all to frequently comes to light with prison guards in our own prisons here in the US. He also acknowledges that Leadership bears blame from the bottom to the top. Bottom line...a real "cluster fuck".
In my opinion the primary fault lies with the unit itself which was a Reserve Unit...poorly trained...and poorly led. The units CG was a woman. There is an old military axiom that states...there are not any bad soldiers only bad leaders. |
Ultimately the Congress can bare some blame for Abu Ghraid...as it was the Congress that has cut our end force level for active duty Military personell by approximately 1,000,000 over the past decade. This has forced the active duty Military to have to rely upon the Reserves and National Guard...who have always been notoriously under trained and poorly lead.
