STATEMENT FROM REP JOHN P. MURTHA [D-PA]:
I have learned through conversations with officials at the Pentagon that at the beginning of November, 2004, the Bush Administration plans to call up large numbers of the military guard and reserves, to include plans that they previously put off to call up the Individual Ready Reserve.

I have said publicly and privately that our forces are inadequate to support our current worldwide tempo of operations. On November 21, 2003, a bipartisan group of 135 members of the House of Representatives wrote to the President urging an increase in the active duty army troop levels and expressed concern that our Armed Forces are over-extended and that we are relying too heavily on the Guard and Reserve.

We didn't get a reply until February 2004, and now as the situation in Iraq is deteriorating, it seems that the Administration will resort to calling up additional guard and reservists, again with inadequate notice.

I'll update your sites, starting with the refshare codes.

I think I'm too old to be drafted (30). If all hell broke out then I'd probably volunteer anyways. :2 cents:

Tanker 09-17-2004 02:22 PM

So far the only government sources saying there will be a draft are politicians who want young voters scared of Bush.

Of course a draft is always on the list of "options" for the Pentagon.
But so is invading Canada.

I won't believe there's a draft until someone who doesn't have a vested interest in using it to scare young voters says there is going to be one.

Scootermuze 09-17-2004 02:43 PM

Hmm.. Didn't read anything about the draft being re-instated.. Just sending those that are already in the military .. National Guard.. Reserves.. yada yada...

Nothing about drafting civilians into the military..

mardigras 09-17-2004 03:38 PM

If you're a doctor or some other highly needed specialties you can be drafted up to age 55. The Doctors Draft Act expired in '73 and has been replaced with the Health Care Professionals Delivery System.

DaLord 09-17-2004 03:43 PM

Let's see what happens when the Bush supporters on GFY are drafted :)

Rob 09-17-2004 03:50 PM

What some people fail to understand is that IF the draft is reinstated then there would have to be a reason why.

Regardless of what Bush did to get us into this mess, we're in it! We can't just apologize and back out. We have pissed off a lot of nations and a shared enemy is the glue that will bond these countries together. Whe helped build so many alliances between countries that you would have never imagined because of what we did in Iraq. What's done is done.

The main reason I don't want to see the draft reinstated is because if it does happen, God help us all because we're going to need it!

NiTe-HaWk 09-17-2004 04:00 PM

I read about this before. I doubt it will happen. If it does though everybody will be scrambling for Mexico. You can't go to Canada because there is some sort of agrement that Canada has with the US that says they will send you back.
I wont worry about what hasn't happened yet.

vivalaspam 09-17-2004 04:03 PM

Please show me anywhere in that pile of useless shit, where it says there is going to be a draft, or where it mentions the draft.

You are a fucking moron.

That would be an odd picture... people wanting to come into Mexico from the States instead of people jumping the gate to get to the states.

During World War I there were three draft registrations. The first, on June 5, 1917, was for all men between the ages of 21 and 31. The second, on June 5, 1918, registered those who attained age 21 after June 5, 1917. (A supplemental registration was held on August 24, 1918, for those becoming 21 years old after June 5, 1918. This was included in the second registration.) The third registration was held on September 12, 1918, for men age 18 through 45.

Crazy1 09-17-2004 04:15 PM

Why draft when you can just bomb...

God's Hand

PornGeneral 09-17-2004 05:17 PM

AC-130 are kick ass.

BradM 09-17-2004 05:19 PM

Well the drudge report says so. Right. I believe that.

When cnn says something then you've got a bit of a more reliable source. :thumbsup

Drake 09-17-2004 05:24 PM

A draft doesn't make it World War III. World Wars are a different matter altogether. But yeah, a draft sucks, and we all saw it coming except for those that hang on every word the President utters publicly.

You'll also find that most of those keyboard Generals so vehemently in support of the war will be the last ones who will want to be drafted. They're happy to have "America" fighting but they don't want to be directly involved...lest they get killed or something.

Drake 09-17-2004 05:28 PM

Sorry, even I've been brainwashed. I meant to say those who are in favor of the Invasion... instead of those in favor of the "war".

Those who blow the most steam are the biggest blowhards. Just bullshit.

They are all for it, till them or their kids have to go to war. Then it MUST be stopped.

Yup...when it comes time for them to pick up arms to fight and potentially die in something they claim they believe in, they'll make Bush's Vietnam Draft dodging look like amateur sport. It's ok as long as it's somebody else's kid fighting the fight.

Backing out and apologizing may be our best option...

Summarization: "...Bin Laden could argue with some cogency that our going into Iraq was the equivalent of the Germans in Stalingrad. They defeated themselves by pouring more in there. Tragic."

Agreed...in addition...end force levels are controlled by Congress. All branches of the military are more than meeting their recruitment levels...thus people are either turned away/or placed on deferred enlistment. The Congress at any time can vote to raise or lower end force levels.

Glad I did my 8 years of active duty, was in Kuwait for Desert Storm, and I feel for the guys over there for this one. But like someone else said, if all hell broke loose, if they'd take a 37 year old guy like me, I'd join back up.

Rochard 09-17-2004 08:44 PM

Did I miss something here? The little bit that I read said something about calling up reserves but nothing about a draft.

Exactly.

It's all about scare tactics.

Giving the newer "high tech" nature of our military,
the much longer training cycles,
the physical condition of our couch potato 18-35 year olds,
and the relative ease with which judges would grant
Conscientous Objector status...
not mush point to having the draft.

With each war, the draft has become less and less of a useful tool for the US military.

No you're not.

If I remember right, they already did their dealins with Canada on that one to prevent people from dodging if they do another draft.
