Jesus fucking Christ - stop the talking fucking banners already

God damn it - PLEASE stop the fucking talking banners. there is NO GOD DAMN NEED FOR THEM. quite giving into those that want them, they will buy ads anyway or others will buy ads.

having them drives away the better surfers to other boards.

they are a pain in the God damn ass and they make this site LESS usable instead of more usable.

testiment to who is buying them is that the people who do CHEAT -my understanding was that the banners arn't suppose to continue to make noise when your mouse moves off them, but some of the current ones DON'T and continue to talk - PROOF that the people who want such things are those that arn't even worth advertising for as they don't play by the rules.

unless adult.com is in such financial shape that it DESPRITLY needs the couple hundred extra dollars?????? I doubt that's the case but if the talking banners continue people WILL start to talk.

Just put the ad server in your hosts file and be done with it.

More Booze 10-26-2004 02:29 PM

One word: Install firefox and get flashblock.

explain

BVF 10-26-2004 02:30 PM

It was that boobiebucks fart banner that started the whole phenomenon...Maybe there were talking banners before that one, but it REALLY got bad after that fart banner.

I did this back when the Naughty Allie banner was ridiculous. I still have flash blocked. Works great for me. Sucks for all the other advertisers using flash, but hey, enough was enough.

Hey Sleazy, where'd you get that domaaaiinnn? :1orglaugh

eroswebmaster 10-26-2004 02:47 PM

I haven't seen a flash banner in months...so if you're an advertiser and using flash banners then you're wasting your money.

You may have a great product and a non-intrusive ad but I will never see it due to those who have violated the gfy member's trust.

Problem is, the ad server is the main gfy server, so that won't work.
I use firefox with adblock, and only block the ones with audio.
Sleazy, just go to www.getfirefox.com, download, install.
Once installed, go to Tools, Extensions, Get More Extensions and install Adblock.
It will add a small tab to flash adds that you can click to get rid of them forever.

quiet 10-26-2004 02:55 PM

i shut down those banners along time ago. never see them. total waste of ad dollars for anyone using them.

interesting.....

You still see animated gif ads, though?

Dildozer 10-26-2004 03:13 PM

I agree this is getting ridiculous, especially when they DON'T stop on mouseoff.

would someone explain the hostfile thing to me please?

BlueQuartz 10-26-2004 03:24 PM

you could have just said

talking banners fucking suck

i would never promote any sponsor with those cheesy, annoying as hell, useless talking shit banners

thank you

pxxx 10-26-2004 03:27 PM

I have to say that they are quite annoying. I think it kind of drives away any clicks it might have received because of its annoyance.

Peaches 10-26-2004 03:30 PM

I don't hear them and I don't have anything installed that blocks stuff. I just don't ever mouse over them.

Tat2Jr 10-26-2004 03:33 PM

After having the sound go off over and over again, I finally broke down and Adblocked all the GFY banners. I NEVER Adblock webmaster banners, but unfortunetly I did it for every banner on GFY. The sound/flash banners ruined it for everyone. If I was a sponsor I'd be very upset, and be demanding that all the sound banners be banned.

Lace 10-26-2004 03:35 PM

"hey man, where'd ya get that domain..."

NinjaSteve 10-26-2004 03:36 PM

Simple solution. Turn your sound down.

I dont think the banners are really targeted at full time GFY users though. more to catch the eye of new folks wandering in and out. The people who have been here a while already know about all the programs up there, from sigs, and threads, etc.

I mean, thats just my viewpoint on it. I could be wrong.

Jimmie 10-26-2004 03:54 PM

I havent seen a flash ad since the whole ordeal with the Naughty Allie banner a while back...

Yep, I did the same. AS I type this I just see a silver ball with a blue F in the middle instead of a flash banner. :)

Wow... You guys must be the same people that complain about Parties at Internext where you get free booze and free entertainment and yet walk away saying the party sucked. Sorry for your 5 seconds of inconvenience that supports the community that you spend the majority of your time gaining entertainment from.

Would you complain about a free ticket to Hawaii too if you had to fly and hear a jet engine the whole way?

Lensman 10-26-2004 05:19 PM

That Dark Cavern one is not allowed. I think the key is that they have to STOP when you mouse out. The ones that don't need to be NUKED. And if one slips by, we need to know about it.

If anyone else has a better idea to get the banners noticed, I'm all ears (pardon the pun).

supports the community? read the damn thread. talking banners make people DISABLE banners - and sound - HURTING your other clients.

since when is it good business sense to cater to 5% of your clients (those with talking banners) who represent 5% of your revenue at the EXPENSE of the other 95%?

I agree with you on this.
5% is not worth it cause that 5% can cost you!

It's simple supply and demand. If people find the banners obnoxious, then they'll find a way to avoid them entirely and the money spent on them is wasted. Bitch about it all you want, but this is simply how it works.

BTW, I bitch about the party if the music is so god damn loud that I can't talk to the person next to me without literally yelling into their ear. I have enough hearing damage from Navy jets, ear infections and working part time at a night club, thankyou very much.

Yes, I don't like fucking with my groove. My tunes are important for my focus and having them interrupted interrupts me. I shouldn't have to reach for the mute button.

How about silent banners, since that's the problem? :2 cents:

Nah, that wont happen untill the legit advertisers start pulling ads and making complaints. Some fail to see the problem, but that's probably because they dont surf GFY as much as the rest.

I have friends who are advertisers here, and all have said the return is extremely low. So really, advertisers sometimes keep the ADs up out of good faith and for the love of this forum. But they are still getting assfucked because of other banners crying for attention with annoying sounds that wont stop. But then again, who can blaim them? They need to be loud to be noticed, I'm sure being placed in such a huge rotation is not fun. Hell, I remember having to refresh a shit load of times to catch the dollars.com banner (I was looking for it)

I also really find it weird that the "big board names" are NOW stepping up on this, because in the past the banners were a lot more annoying and intrusive. Most banners these days are "okay." I even like some of them, mostly Dollars.com. I guess because the sound reflects something related to biz.

Summary:
-People with traffic and brains have flash disabled.
-Advertisers will not get what they pay for, and shit will have a downfall eventually. Somewhere down the line changes will have to be made.
-The board members is what makes this forum function and grow to what it is, not the faulty and non existant features. People who have been here since 2001 have spoken up, doesnt that say something? Remember wen Person A leaves Location A, himself and all his friends will slowly but surely move onto Location B where they are treated better

The above is obviously personal views and random ranting, so fuck off if you feel the need to argue with me.
