An actual Business thread on GFY ..... How often does your host backup your server?

Ok, I'm probably venting.....little bit ticked , ok, ALOT ticked, because I screwed up a Live page on one of my sites very early yesterday morning and didn't have a local copy. Totally my own fault for editing it in my ftp program and uploading without making a copy, so I kicked myself and then immediately requested any copy of that page from a recent backup.

Now, since this page has been running live on my site for a day and a half now  , I'm wondering this....

How often does your host backup your server?

and

Why would a particular page NOT be found in a recent backup?

Please share........

If nothing else, I need to vent....anybody that wants to call me and let me bitch them out right now is welcome to :winkwink:

Naked Hosting backs my stuff up weekly! They save my ass all the time!!

benc 11-01-2004 02:40 PM

Never. Usually the hosts backup services are overpriced, and then when the time finnaly comes that you need it, for some reason the backup is screwed up.

Rochard 11-01-2004 02:40 PM

Twice a day or more, depending on which server.

We also tend to keep local copies.

And we always, always backup pages locally and on the server before we work on them.

the Shemp 11-01-2004 02:41 PM

one a week...works for me

some_idiot 11-01-2004 02:42 PM

Never. I learned long ago working on an insurance company
project that if your livelyhood depends on it, run 2 servers and
a development box.

Development -> Staging Server -> test test test -> Live Server

Make 3 months updates at a time and then just move them over
on your maintance days.

Raven 11-01-2004 02:42 PM

We run a local network, so we're always backed up.

You can never have too much money or too many backups...

Mojohost.com backs us up once a week.

I know, it was my stupidity for not making a copy and I have really cursed myself since yesterday morning for it. But GEEZ why in the hell would my host not have a copy of this page anywhere in my backups ? I'm pissed

And oh , yes, before I forget..... I LOVE you Rochard :Graucho

Holy shit. So you know what an implementation plan, impact plan is....along with a data migration proceedure and roll back plan is as well !

There is hope.

the Shemp 11-01-2004 02:57 PM

Yes, I've been told a couple different things, one was that there was no backup of that page and the other was that the page backed up with the blank copy that I had screwed up on

Either way....I'm likely screwed out of a page that held monthes worth of archives for my site.

Don't know what in the hell happened. I uploaded it and it uploaded blank. It was my fault for not having a local copy of it and now I'm really screwed :feels-hot

Screwed up situation Ivy. Any thing you can do about it? What about the wayback machine?

Someone has to have the link to that right?

wow, its not in the wrong directory on the server?

SinisterStudios 11-01-2004 03:27 PM

NEVER EVER EDIT A LIVE DOCUMENT!!!!!
That is Server admin 101, you must have a test server to make these changes on (or at least backup the files before you make a change. We usualy take the file and do a .old at he end ot the date and it makes it easier to rollback if needed.

Never edit live websites!!! We backup our servers to tape and do a rsync to a backup server we have at our office so we have 3 copies at all times, believe me you need to do this.

GTS Mark 11-01-2004 03:29 PM

Our servers do it once a day, it looks for changes on the server and downloads the most recent changes.

We had a terrible problem 8 months ago where we lost over 2 weeks of data and had no backup. Never again...

Juicy D. Links 11-01-2004 05:18 PM

i think my shit is backedup daily.

But i have local backups also just in case.

I am so sexy it hurts

goBigtime 11-01-2004 05:20 PM

You'll find that the usual answer is:

IF virtual server - Daily (At least)
If not -- find a new host. The reason for this can be a lot of security issues with shared server environments. If a client gets pissed off at the hosting company, they might go off on the server and mess up a lot of other clients of the hosting company as well (on that virtual server).

IF dedicated server - usually never, unless you are paying specifically for that service.

with a dedicated server, you are usually responsible for your own backups.

Webair does do weekly backups for dedicated servers ,no extra charge.

Turns out the server backed up the day that I uploaded the page and so it backed up the page that was blank.

But it's all fixed now and thanks to Mike @ Webair, I'll have daily backups from now on :winkwink: But I will NEVER edit a live document again without saving a local copy first LOL so hopefully it won't matter !

NEver ... I don't ask them to do that

Disco_Stu 11-01-2004 05:55 PM

The webhost I run is raid5 so it's instantaneously backed up as soon as you even upload a .001 k image...

Every host should do nightly backups at least, or you should start looking for a serious host.

Rob 11-01-2004 05:57 PM

What's a business thread? :eek7

Kidding!

I have my own servers and I back them up weekly. :thumbsup
