police scanners are awesome

I bought a scanner at RADIO SHACK and setup all the local
police/fire/rescue channels.

Have had it running 24 hours a day for a week now. It's pretty cool.

You hear about robberies
and all kinds of shit happening right in your neighborhood you never would have thought of....

buy one today!!!!!!!! yay
the shittier your neighborhood the more fun it is to listen
to

Radio Shack

jaYMan 11-07-2004 01:34 PM

cordless phone conversations are easy to pick up too on those things...

pretty amusing sometimes.

joshuawk 11-07-2004 01:35 PM

I Remember when I was a kid my grandpa had a scanner and
I heard some phonesex..

was pretty cool shit.

I didn't think it still would work on uhmm 2.4 gigahertz and
what not.

Wiggles 11-07-2004 01:36 PM

joshuawk 11-07-2004 01:45 PM

they pickup CELL phones or just cordless?

Holly 11-07-2004 01:48 PM

We used to listen to cell phone conversations on my dad's all the time. Not sure if it still works or not. I know they would pick up cordless phone convos of people who lived really close, like in an apartment building or a next door neighbor. My exboyfriend's sister used to listen to the divorced woman who lived next to her talk about how she wanted to fuck her husband, lol.

They listened to ALL this poor woman's calls, lol. Anytime you went over to their house, they had it turned on and sitting out on the kitchen counter or table. They were putting in a pool and his sister's husband was doing a lot of the work himself. The neighbor lady would watch him from the window and then call up her friend and tell her about how hot he looked working outside. What's weird is that they were sort of friends. They all spoke regularly and they both had little boys who were about 6 or 7 and would spend the night with one another. I don't guess they ever told her about it.

This was back in the 90s. I was thinking they make the cordless phones now so that people can't do that, but I may be wrong. My freak neighbors are probably listening to me, too.

You can pick up analog cell phones but not digital. Same thing for cordless phones, the older ones operated on a 46.00 range but newer ones operate on a 2.4 ghz and higher range and usually they have the capability to scramble the signal.

Just older cordless phones. Cell phones are between 870.000 and 890.000 MHz. All scanners sold in the US MUST have that frequency range blocked out. You might be able to pick up a few conversations on either side of that range but you will miss a majority of them. Not to mention that most phones are digital now instead of cellular.

If you want to try cordless phones, try

46.61
46.63
46.67
46.71
46.73
46.77
46.83
46.87
46.93
46.97

Pretty scary when your government doesn't want you to be able to listen to them spending your tax dollars.

KRL 11-07-2004 02:22 PM

Cell phones used to be all analog. I don't think anyone at all realized in the early days when you talked on a cell phone you were literally broadcasting over the airwaves like a walkie talkie and anyone with a scanner could listen in to your entire convertsation.

Most of the cell phones are all transmitting digitally now so you can't here what's being said.

But in the day, the 800mhz frequencies were funny as hell.

emthree 11-07-2004 02:29 PM

The closest I ever got to that, was fucking around with those 2Mile range walkie talkies. It was fucking funny messing with people in the area, and get them hyped up and ready to throw down. Which scanner would you guys recommend? I seen some pretty fancy ones over the years, but never looked into it. I think I'm going to buy one

Current Shopping List
[1] War Driver antenna (picks up open wifi signals, while driving)
[2] Police Scanner -- ??
