Joe Citizen 11-09-2004 07:15 PM

KRL is it easy to modify the phpbb board.. I will use a template of theres but i want my own logo.. Is that simple? Also if I was using phpbb for a bit to develope traffic to the forum can i move the already registered members to Vbulletin?

I have two message boards. One powered by PHPBB and the other by vBulletin.

vBulletin has SO many more features. I love it. I'd recommend vBulletin any day. It's worth the extra money.

For vBulletin I spent a total of $355: purchased the software outright, had them install it for me so that I knew if would be done right, and paid for a year of premium customer service.

i run a few phpbb based sites, adding new templates is easy if you can use an FTP client, and modding them is very easy if you have notepad and can press CTRL+F

What are your boards Donny?

Yug 11-09-2004 07:40 PM

I use PHPbb for my boards (http://forums.a1celebs.com) ... Initially, if you want to fully customize your board, its a deep search through the stylesheets and template files. But once you have the hang of it, its alot of fun and very easy.

I'd actually be interested in the advantages of vbulletin. Apart from the fact that phpbb is FREE and vbulletin is not

Giorgio_Xo 11-09-2004 07:42 PM

Both are very insecure proggies. I would recommend Gossamer Threads.

Lensman has made it clear that linking to other boards is an offense punishable by banning.

Ow sorry donny..

phpBB is worthless IMO, that's why's it free.

If you have small traffic, go for it.

i used to have a phpbb based site with over 50,000 members

never crashed, no database problems, everything went fine

phpBB is free because it's open source and developed by the community...not because it is crap.

Yeh, its got a nice control panel. Not sure on moving members. Maybe see if VB has an import members feature. I'm sure there must be a way.

Argoz 11-09-2004 09:30 PM

Most of the popular boards offer a conversion kit of some sort.

I haven't played with vB in quite some time...but it's be willing to bet they have one.

TheJimmy 11-09-2004 09:33 PM

there's a site I know about that has

128606420 posts and 1094772 users that seems to be running phpBB just fine...

either is fine, but a LOT of people rave about the VBulletin cpanel...

start with phpBB and when you get bored and feel like dropping cash by VBull and pay a mysql guy to move your db over...

:2 cents:

the_wizz 11-09-2004 09:40 PM

They both have converters I believe.

phpbb is nice, its free. It works.

http://integramod.com is a modded version of the board software. Comes with a ton of awesome features.

If you'd like, drop me an ICQ 313367549 and I'll share a couple of sites with you that are running this modded phpBB.

vixm 11-09-2004 09:52 PM

Both are great.

Depends on what you need. If you're just starting a forum, stick with phpBB.

I'd recommend vB b/c there are better admin options and easier to moderate w/ many members.

vickyQ 11-10-2004 04:58 PM

Get phpBB for free and wait for the new generation of it (v 2.2.x) which will be the best ever: ;-)

Manowar 11-10-2004 04:59 PM

Vbulletin is worth the money.
