They were cool in the mid 90's... just fell asleep at the wheel. They took their success for granted and didn't adjust fast enough to the changing market :2 cents:

Gee. when you spend billions buying the people in DC so that you can arrest spammers, then small things like this are going to happen.

FUCK AOL

yea, now people are using their software for retards, and your average family person doesn't know how to operate anything outside of AOL...lol

xclusive 11-11-2004 09:33 PM

It's amazing how they keep turning out the same shit and keep profiting. It's about time it started to catch up to them...

Furious_Female 11-11-2004 09:37 PM

Considering AOL and Road Runner are both owned by Time Warner, it will probably eventually be called America on Road or something like that, merging the cable with the AOL UI.

If anyone has noticed, AOL has been moving towards becoming more web based over the last few years. I'm sure changes are ahead as dial up phases out. But people like me, who won't have any broadband available in their area for the next decade or more, still need dial up service. And there are a lot of remote locations in the US without broadband still.

I talk to so many AOL users who don't understand that AOL = the internet. They believe that they cannot visit sites outside of AOL. Or they believe all the websites are owned and operated via AOL. They don't understand the basic concept of an ISP. They believe they are connecting to AOL as opposed to thru AOL. :ugone2far

I love the AOL members that assume their email address is just the screen name no matter where they are on the internet. :1orglaugh

Well, since dialup isn't going to be around forever, those 17 million subscribers aren't going to be either.

jukeboxfrank 11-11-2004 09:54 PM

I hate AOL I use them when I travel and I travel a lot....
If it was not so easy to find different local numbers I would toss
that piece of shit software in the trash......IMHO " included so they don't sue my ass off. I would look silly without an ass"

gigi 11-11-2004 09:57 PM

AOL also owns Netscape :eatmouse

slavdogg 11-11-2004 09:59 PM

you can get satellite broadband for a reasonable amount- works well for many in that situation.

I have a DirecWay/DirecTV 2 way satellite, it downloads fast but uploading and surfing are worse than dial up. I currently have 7 machines sharing the satellite connection... it's ok, until it snows, then I'll be grumpy 24/7 haha. I also have cable in another location that I access remotely but I hope to move soon and end this broadbandless insanity :)

I disagree with the topic posted. probably they will just merge with one of the top companies in the U.S. But for them to formally closed down, probably not in the near future :D

i will ALWAYS have a dial up account

I travel to too damn many remote country areas with no broadband in the town...i need dial up

dial up will ALWAYS be around....people will always easily fall back on it when nothing else is available...fact is, as slow and shitty as it is, it is the #1 easiest and quickest way to subscribe to the internet

Doctor Dre 11-11-2004 11:27 PM

Dialup will be around only until nationwide wireless broadband access is available and cheaper than dialup which will have to happen sooner or later, hopefully within 5 years.

There is a even a growing movement, much to the ISPs disgust, to make Internet access free for all like the Freenets of the old days. I believe Philly is going to try this fairly soon with a citywide free WAN. :upsidedow

Also to the people that are keeping AOL for travelling and stay in cities rather than remote areas, try Boingo instead.
