Spyware crackdown?

Care to share what you all know re the supposed current investigation of the bigger spyware creators/distributors out there?

Can you really go to prison for this stuff? The good news is it will be Federal Prison... not too many criminals there looking for anal loving.:1orglaugh

Everyone screams and bitches about SPAM.... It's only because they see SPAM but not the spyware. Once they figure out how infected they are and the problems it causes it's a different story, and it's becoming more and more common.

pornguy 11-12-2004 11:57 PM

man, I hope they get like 3000 years. Spyware sucks. I have every firewall, antispyware and antivirus on earth and from time to time they get me.
I just had to re-set my laptop about 2 weeks ago because some asshole sent me something in an email that I didn't even have to open. I auto-openned itself, fucked my laptop and started exploiting port 80.
They should really back off from spam and concentrate on virus-makers and spyware-exploiters.

But they should get the fuck out of Iraq also, and they won't, so what are our chances?

49thParallel 11-13-2004 12:21 AM

No adware / spyware thread would be complete without my 2 cents. Shut down Standard Internet (12Clicks program) and you've already made the internet a much better place.

Ah, but his software is simply "ad-supported". But, then again, try to tell that to McAfee, Norton, Microsoft, and all the other internet security hounds...and you will find that they don't refer to it in such enduring terms.

The ironic thing is, some of his ads actually sell "real" spyware removers. And, if you look in their spyware database, you will find the other little goodies offered up in his other ads. Guess that's one way to generate business.

Not all of them however are "real" spyware detectors. One of them has been shown and is listed by McAfee and Norton as a trojan...simply Masquarading as a spyware remover. In reality, it actually installs a few new nasties of it's own.

Now, for my bit of fortune telling..12Clicks will enter this thread...and he won't really touch on the subject at hand. But he will either a) call himself my better b) say that I am bitter c) make a "day job" reference. d) he will refer to me complaining to the fcc. Hoo Hum... Ron, stick to flogging your "ad-supported" software. That is undeniably where your real strengths lie.

xenigo 11-13-2004 12:29 AM

Somehow I always had a sneaking suspicion that 12Clicks was a peice of shit in more ways than one.

the Asshats in Washington should make a law that it is a criminal offense to write anything to someones harddrive except a cookie.
its your harddrive, not some scammers.

another weekend, another post by the loser who doesn't understand what adware or spyware is, doesn't understand what an ad broker does and doesn't understand that when the ftc tells you to get lost you really don't know what you're talking about.:1orglaugh

That pretty much touches the subject, loser. :1orglaugh

is that the same sneaking suspicion that you'll never amount to much?

I agree, one of us doesn't have a clue. Can you guess which one?

And my apologies, did I misrespresent your "ad-supported" software as adware /spyware. Boy, silly me.And I missed the part where you explain why the legitimate spyware removers that some of your ads sell, include the other programs your ads sell in their adware/spyware database. Oh, that's right, you didn't explain this...but it is somewhat ironic don't you think.

And Ron, no confusion as to your role as an ad-broker. What does strike me though is that your successful company seems to primarily attract the underbelly of the internet world. i.e. the adware/spyware downloading (opps, I mean ad -supported) "free" screensavers and all the other browser hijacking scumware. Ype, the scum, serving up the scum...that is an accomplishment that you should be proud of.

Oh, and you forgot to quote the end of my last post. Frankly I'm hurt, because as usual, my fortune telling skills were uncanningly accurate. Showing once again, you really are a one trick pony, aren't you, my puffed up little buddy.

P.S. All you GFY'ers need not take my word for the above. Place this little bit of code between the head tags of an html page. Try reloading the page a few times. You will have plenty of opportunities to download any number of the lovely little "ad-supported" software generously offered up by 12Clicks and Standard Internet.

<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript" src="http://www.popuptraffic.com/assign.php?l=test"></script>

So, next time you go to [ost on this board that spyware and adware has invaded your computer, sned a thank you note to 12Clicks. I am sure he will appreciate it.

warlock5 11-16-2004 05:13 PM

Virus writers can get jail time, I don't see why adware/spyware writers should get any exceptions.

If you want to have "ad supported" software, fine. But when I shouldn't have to downlaod Spybot and Ad-aware to uninstall it.

Then again, if there was no spyware it'd be a lot harder to make $50 for 15 minutes of work on old ladies' computers :1orglaugh

Ahhh...clever. I see you waited a couple of days to reply, so as to "appear" to not be hovering over your keyboard as you usually are...just waiting for someone to mention your name. That shows more will power then I thought you had. Congratulations...it's a big step for you..and I want you to know that we are all oh so proud of you.

If it wasn't for your scummy business parctices, you really don't give me much of a reason to bother playing with you. But, luckily, you are still a wee bit of trailer trash...so I will continue to dangle the string in front of you for awhile longer.

Nuclei22 11-18-2004 11:26 PM

I don't see what the problem is......

if this guy is making $$$ fair play to him, its not like hes stealing or actually harming anyone, poeple are free to choose, if you can make a buck outta them then thats cool.

If you can find a way of making more $$ thats even cooler, most of these guys bitching on about spamming and other types of money making are only pissed cus they aren't in there making the bucks.

Hey where can i find more info on this software it sounds like a field of the industry that i could take advantage of, i think i will look into it

And so the game goes on....

My agenda is simple..to make as many people aware as possible about the sleazy business tactics of Standard Internet & yourself, Ron, alias 12Clicks....also known as the king of fine "ad-supported" software.

49thParallel 11-23-2004 05:15 PM

And Ron, just because I'm in a generous mood, I'm going to give you a few business and life pointers.

First: When you own a business, and a person, such as myself, comes onto a board, and accuses your company of certain actions, and he (meaning I) provides detailed proof.....what do you do?

Choice a) Assuming the allegations are false, You act like any professional would, and you defend your company and your product with counter discussion and sound facts.

Choice b) Assuming the allegations are true, you revert to a childhood practice, and you instead try to discredit the other person. Similar to a child saying, "Yah but you eat worms", without having any information that I may or may not in fact eat worms.

So, you see the obvious result...my facts are still facts...but yours...ummm. not so much so.

A real world example would be the New York Times running an article saying that the seats in the new VW Jetta are made from endangered tiger skins. And the next day, the president of VW filing a counter news release that said..."Yah, but where did you write that article...in your bedroom"?

You starting to see the problem with this yet Ron?

Now, give your response some time. I've laid out the simple steps above. I want you to take baby steps...but be aware, it will be very easy for you to fall back to your usual habits. I have faith in you...please don't disappoint.

I don't have to. The FTC did that when they told you not to call them again. I prefer to taunt the fool who thinks he's relevant.

If the allegations were true, the FTC would take your calls. They, like me, understand you're a bitter, clueless shut in. The FTC chooses to ignore you. I, however, have much more time on my hands. :1orglaugh

If the article WAS written in the guys bedroom (as your rants are) it would make perfect sense.

Again, one of us has facts..and one of us has posted same, for anyone to test for themselves. The other one of us has continued to utilize the "childhood" fear response.

Ron, frankly you are starting to worry me....

Hey Nuclei22...
I'll tell You what's wrong with spyware floating around freely:

"it's not like he's stealing or actually harming anyone"...
EEH!! Hold it!
12Clicks/Standard Internet might not do that, I haven't got a scope on those.

BUT! Malwares HAVE surfaced that interferes with the normal promotion-chain
between affiliates & sponsors, some tries to outright steal affiliates' traffic
and even signups(!), by altering cookies and referal-codes "on-the-fly", when
surfers are out looking for their treats...

Now how's that for "not actually harming anyone"?
Some affiliates work HARD for their income, some not so hard.
This shit harms not only affiliates, but the industry as well, in several ways
and especially in the long run.

I'm a firm believer in that the industry needs a lot of affiliates that push
about say.. 100 sales/month, and that it will collapse if it's dependent on
"whales" solely.

What do You think happens in a while if all these smaller affiliates leaves when
their work produces no more than 10 sales?
It's not going to be worth it for them and that'll mean the assholes behind
affiliate-malicious malware/spyware have less traffic/signups to steal as well.
In this scenario, sponsors' sales will eventually decrease severly because
the work originally put in by affiliates is no longer there.
Maybe a few legit "whales" will remain and not bother about the problem,
I doubt it though.

The legit affiliates, no matter how many signups they push, will simply get fed
up with it and leave the industry...
The malware-scammers will leave the industry because they no longer have
anyone elses work to steal...
The industry crumbles.

You want to be able to work like an affiliate in the future? Don't contribute
to shit that fucks with that workmodel.
