David Lee Roth Trains to Become Paramedic

NEW YORK (AP) - Rocker David Lee Roth, the former Van Halen frontman, is taking up a new trade.

Instead of screaming "Jump," he'll be yelling "Clear!"

Roth, 50, has been riding for several weeks with a New York ambulance crew in training to become a paramedic, The New York Post reported Tuesday.

"I have been on over 200 individual rides now," said Roth. "Not once has anyone recognized me, which is perfect for me."

The singer, who spent a decade with Van Halen before embarking on a solo career, except a collaboration with the band for two new songs on a greatest hits album, has been riding along with crews in the Bronx, Manhattan and Brooklyn several nights a week.

His training seems to be going well.

Several weeks ago, Roth saved the life of a heart attack victim in the Bronx by using a defibrillator.

He takes his work so seriously that he did not want publicity so that it would not "diminish what I am trying to do here." He has said that he did not want the neighborhoods he was working in named so that he would not draw attention to himself or co-workers.

"You would never know you were dealing with a rock-'n'-roll guy," said Linda Reissman, Roth's EMS consultant and tutor. "His commitment really is touching. He wants to help people."

Bozy-bozy bop, ditty-bop!

And by the way, he's gay. Worst kept secret in the business.

I was in NY for ad tech last week and he was having a drink at the hotel lounge, he was wearing is paramedics uniform, he looks really old. I had a drink with him and he told me he became a parademic because his dad's dying wish was that he be in the medical field.

There will come a day
when youth will fade away
What will they say about me?
Hey, isn't that the guy who shoved me into in the ambulance?

A *good* paramedic with years of experience makes about $30/hour in the NY area.

At least we know he's not doing it for the money, for once. :)

God if I ever had a heart attack, it would be so awesome to have David Lee Roth to take care of me! :thumbsup

Good for him!

Doesn't ANYBODY here think about what they will do 'after porn' with the money they've made? I mean, I've been saving money over the years so I can pay for college for what I REALLY want to do...ya know? I love doing what I do now...but, damn, I have a lot of higher expectations and am continuously setting myself up to make them reality in the future.

Good for you, Dave. :thumbsup

So he gets to forget the 2K plus hours of classroom time that is requried for a Paramedic and just starts riding with an EMS crew? This SOOOO screams publicity stunt, or someone forgot to tell the whole story.
A person doesn't just ride around with an ambulance for a few days and a week later gets to defib someone. It takes serious class room training, testing, OJT and committment before a person gets to this stage. Where did he do his class room time? What about state certifications? A person doesn't decide to be a paramedic one day just because their stage career is over.

How would you feel if you were in serious trouble and he David Lee Roth showed up to save your life? I'd be fucking terrified.

About 10 years ago I dated a girl, very nice girl but extremely, extremely stupid, just absolutely no common sense. The type of girl who would think she's locked out of a room because she tried to pull the door, when it's a push. A couple years after we broke up I saw her driving an ambulance, I couldn't fucking believe it. If her OR David Lee Roth showed up to save me, I think I'd take my chances and walk to the hospital, no matter what the injury.

StuartD 11-17-2004 01:54 PM

the scary thing is, if people did know what areas he was riding in a as a paramedic, there's fans out there die hard enough to actually cause serious harm to themselves just hoping that he'd show up.

Re-fucking-lax. Just because the article doesn't mention classes surely doesn't mean he didn't take them.
