Ipod's Dirty Secret?

I been thinking about getting an Ipod and I came across this.

www.ipodsdirtysecret.com

Is it true that the Ipods batt in not replacable and it lasts only 18 months? I didnt bother checking out the Ipod site yet, I figure Id ask here first.

I dont think thats the case anymore, and i believe there are websites out there that show you how to replace the battery now.

i could be wrong though :)

iwantchixx 11-17-2004 12:30 PM

there are aftermarket batteries that you can buy and install yourself.

Manowar 11-17-2004 12:30 PM

Apple replace the battery after that time if you send it back to them because its fucked.

Ray@TastyDollars 11-17-2004 12:32 PM

From www.apple.com/ipod/specs.html

"Rechargeable batteries have a limited number of charge cycles and may eventually need to be replaced" I guess they can be replaced.

thx guys

P.s What online store has the best deals on these?

In the video, the guy on the phone said $250 plus a mail in fee. If they've changed it now because these guys owned them, I still wouldn't buy it on principle.

Abyss_Vee 11-17-2004 12:37 PM

Only 1 way to find out,, why dont you call their support and tell them that you have an ipod and the battery doesnt work anymore.... see what they say :2 cents:

jacked 11-17-2004 12:39 PM

thats a great video atleast he didn't just let them fuck him i'd be heated too

It's just like the batteries in cell phones. I have to replace mine every 4-6 months because I drain it almost completely each day and have to fully recharge it every night.

Did you even watch the video? First of all, learn how to use a cellphone, second, the guy on the phone told him that it would be $250 plus a shipping fee to replace the battery. Then he said "so you may as well just buy a new one".

i think it's a standard duration date for the batteries. pretty normal.

lazycash 11-17-2004 12:56 PM

In response to the video made by these guys Apple announced a battery replacement program, http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/battery.html

They now charge $99 to replace the battery. Certainly better than $250, but still a big time ripoff. As much as I love my Ipod, this is the single biggest reason why I won't ever buy another one or recommend anyone else to buy one. There are too many other options out there now that are identical in function and quality with the ability to swap out batteries for next to nothing.

I have to believe this was a sneaky strategy by Apple from the outset to increase revenue. I find it hard to believe that all the planning went into the development and they didn't think of how the consumer would replace a dead battery.

Yea, but those guys said the batt was NOT replacable. Then, from what I read here and on the Apple site, it is replacable.

someone posted this link last night:

CompUSA selling 10GB iPod's for $130.00

pornguy 11-17-2004 01:05 PM

I have never seen the charm in using an ipod. I dont know why. Maybe becasue I dont listen to music that much.

Odie 11-17-2004 01:07 PM

I just got an ipod it's awesome but the only prob is that you can't go from one pc to another unless they have the same tunes on it or else it'll defalut and erase everything else that's already on it!

Tat2Jr 11-17-2004 01:10 PM

I just hate that an external 120gig hard drive is around $110, but when you encase a 40 gig hard drive in plastic with some buttons and some simple software all of a sudden it becomes $300. I want a hard drive MP3 player, but stick to my MP3 playing portable CD player just because of the principle of it.

really? a new battery for my laptop is almost $125....and I get the same amount of pleasure out of both
$100 for a new ipod battery doesn't sound like a bad deal

n3in 11-17-2004 04:24 PM

i was gonna go out and buy an ipod tonight...does this mean i shouldnt?

Sly 11-17-2004 04:36 PM

Oh man. I'm sitting here looking at my Dell DJ and I don't see any doors or openings for replacement batteries. That sucks. Though I really don't use mine too much, so I don't expect to kill them anytime soon.

demented 11-17-2004 04:40 PM

Get a Creative Labs Nomad Zen Xtra 30GB. It's only $239.99 and offers way more storage than the Ipod for a better price. Plus I think it has way better sound (I've tried both Ipod and the Zen)

Plus the battary is easly removable and only cost about 20 bucks to replace if you ever need to.

A laptop costs $2000 an Ipod $200.

Fuck, Ill bet if you Ebay a used Ipod with a dead bat you can get $100 easy for it. You take that $100 add another $100 and you get a new Ipod . So id rather pay $100 for a new unit than just a batt....LOL

Your laptop is $3000, an ipod is $300. You don't see the difference? That sounds like a horrible deal to me.

abadfish 11-17-2004 04:52 PM

You can buy ipod replacement batteries at numerous places online... they even come with tools and instructions on how to replace them. A lot of the after market batteries even have longer life. I've had my ipod for over a year and the battery is fine but just like any rechargeable battery they don't last forever.

That ipod dirty secret site is so old and not really applicable anymore. Its more misleading then anything.
