If a newbie contacts you on ICQ and wants some tips how to get started in this biz?

If a newbie suddenly contacts you on ICQ and wants some tips how to get started in this biz - do you:

1. Spend 3 minutes giving basic advice and some urls to newbie resorce sites?

2. say - fuck off n00b?

Giving help to anyone is always benefict in many ways. :thumbsup

beergood 11-19-2004 08:49 AM

3 minutes of advice will turn into multiple 3 minute sessions. so you might as well say 300 minutes.

ronaldo 11-19-2004 08:50 AM

I USUALLY do #1 because you never know if he'll come back as a client or refer others to you.

I say usually because if the guy's a cock about it, I'll do #2 (I think I've done that twice).

BVF 11-19-2004 08:52 AM

I get emails and messages EVERY WEEK from people wanting to get started. What I do is:

1. Tell them that they missed the gravy train.
2. IF they're REALLY determined, go to www.theadultwebmaster.com and www.pornresource.com and read EVERYTHING on those pages.

That's what I did back in the day.

Dokus 11-19-2004 08:53 AM

I've had it once. I helped a guy out. give him tips etc
a month later he owns a 100k tgp makes some nice figures, and then he didn't knew me. cause he was a "big"player now

lol

Pornweaver 11-19-2004 08:54 AM

3. Ignore them.

Funky Bastard 11-19-2004 08:56 AM

Let them learn themselve if they want to earn money here so much.

It's the value of networking, people! You can do both 1 & 2 and make great contacts!

OR, if you're really concerned about the time you spend with them, find a way to get something back, by way of a link or taking your "good name" to the boards. People can help you as much as you can help them - at least, that's what I've learned. 2cents

BradM 11-19-2004 10:02 AM

I had a guy contact me recently to get help. I try to give as much info as I can without spending an hour a day talking to them. Helping is good. :)

And that happens once in a while.

Vicky Yambo.biz 11-19-2004 10:16 AM

loverboy 11-19-2004 10:23 AM

does't hurt if you just give some pointers or links so he/she can start working on them.

Just say you charge $100/minute for advice, or they can get free advice at http://www.cozyacademy.com/

Trixxxia 11-19-2004 10:31 AM

I help whenever I can - I don't mind answering questions (even before I started working for TopBucks) & I've always had the idea that you never know who you are really chatting to (could be someone knowledgeable testing if you're just a natural jerk) & you never know who'll they'll become.

Helping people doesn't hurt you - when you give them the basics & show them where to get more details - it won't hurt you.
A search on google would yield them the same type of resources, a less 'human' approach but they'd get there if they really wanted.

Most will give up after I explain why their galleries aren't visible online if they are linking to C:\My Documents\..... - the FTP info is enough for most to give up. The ones that don't I admire, they just suck up so much info and they put it all together and run with it. It's good to see them doing well and how far they come.

Better to make a friend than an enemy in any business - today it takes up a few minutes of your time, tomorrow it may save you many resources.

polish_aristocrat 11-19-2004 10:36 AM

Well, I started this thread since 1 week ago someone contacted me and I spent like 3-5 minutes chatting with him and giving some pointers...but this was the first time that happened to me.

I figured most people here would rather give him the "STFU n00b" attitude.

NOTE - sponsor reps are something different, they cannot be rude and they have to try to bind the newbiei to their affiliate program.

Very true.

If he hit me up on my personal icq my reaction MAY be quite different, depending on what HE (or she) had to offer me. :winkwink:

Rookie 11-19-2004 10:41 AM

I had a newb contact back in February. I gave him some advice - actually several sessions. Eventually he decided his galleries didn't work, so I sold him some of mine. He took them along with some referral links to sponsors and to date has made me over $1,000 :) Not bad for a couple hours of my time.

MandyBlake 11-19-2004 10:57 AM

I get that A LOT! They want to know EVERYTHING! I give them a bit of info. But sometimes I really feel like saying...I had to figure it out on my own and do the hard work, so you can too!

maxjohan 11-19-2004 10:58 AM

Why should you not help them get started. Only does good things to yourself in the long run.

Something I learned is that you cant go with this closed mind attitued if you want to make it big in business. Ask anyone that
is successful. You give and you get back in one way or another.

Newbies is not your enemy, its yourself.

You should feel good about helping others

:)

ronaldo 11-19-2004 11:03 AM

If you think it's bad on icq, try it when you're working a booth at a show.

They'll pin you down and you have nowhere to go and no way of simply ignoring them.

In Florida, I spent about half an hour with some guy running him through the basics of getting started. Finally I wrote down a couple of resource sites and told him to check them out.

omg, you're too nice doug.
my feeling is i've learned everything myself with trial and error (and emulation) so why hend over your knowledge to someone else?
I just point them towards some resource sites and boards, unless they're already in the biz and we can learn from each other.

pornguy 11-19-2004 11:58 AM

Spens a few minutes with them. You never know, they may already be able to help you with something.

For this reason - I mentioned that it's always been this way with me - doesn't necessarily have to do with the job. My ICQ is on 20 hours a day - I've always had people contacting me with questions - either for the TGP/MGP/DMOZ - really - the Topbucks job just makes it easier for me to network with more qualified people in case I don't have all the answers ;)
