I just read so far 8 are announced dead though (mostly very old people, from heart attacks and 1 guy who lost control of his motorcycle...)

Yep, after the 6.9 Northridge Quake in '94 we had to deal with hundreds of aftershocks.
I got so fed up watching more cracks open in my house I said fuck this time to head back east.
The one thing I love about Florida is there are no earthquakes possible since we aren't on or near any fault lines.
I've had 2 hurricanes to deal with in 10 years, and looking back they were just an inconvenience for a week each. I'll take that over quakes that can come out of no where by far.
