Strongbox... wow!
We've had Pennywize installed on all our domains for some time, but just lately their seemed to be a lot of usernames getting in without Pennywize stopping them despite lowering the settings.
We decided to give Strongbox a try and have been blown away by it. Ray who installed it for us on all our paysites is a great great guy and i cannot reccomend his software highly enough. To give credit where credit is due, many thanks Ray! Strongbox |
strong box the shit :thumbsup

I love it myself :)
Kicked pennywize and proxypass in the ass.. |
Yep. Ray and Strongbox gets two thumbs way up here too. Pennywize was a joke in comparison.
|
I like PW more.

I agree, i switched to strongbox about 3 months ago and i love it :thumbsup |
after I adjusted my PennyWise settings and set a download limit, things have been running smoothly. They're ok.

When I changed over to StrongBox and my BW in the member areas droped by at least 30%, server load from pennywize / proxypass went back to normal. The amount of password leaks I had before strongbox blew me away. Pennywize = super bad, at least get ProxyPass. |
StrongBox is the SHIT. Ray will get you hooked up :thumbsup
|
TheDoc told me in vegas to get Strongbox so I did.
I don't have anything else to compare it to but no problems so far. I was blown away by the very low price of it. I think with pennywize you have to pay a monthly fee? |
I was right....Pennywize starts at $30 a month and can be as much as $170 a month (depending on the size of your member base)
I paid a $90 flat fee for strongbox....plus most people say its better. That's a no brainer |
We had Ray set it up on one of our load balance set ups a year or so ago but we didnt have time then to sort out the teething problems. Would like to try it again but we have a much bigger load balance set up now and don't want to cause any major problems. :2 cents:

I have installed both, tried both, didnt see a difference in BW, its all about settings, they do similar work.

Thanks mattyboy, Tony, Doc, Tat, Buddah, HungLo, and Lenny.
It really means a lot to hear that it's working so well for so many people because I put my heart and soul into deveoping Strongbox. After spending about a year on something called PicFortress I had to shelve that project due to compatibility issues. I went back and picked up some research I'd done on password sites and dictionary attacks and 18 months later had the first release of Strongbox ready. After PicFortress didn't pan out it's great to know that my more recent work is working so well for so many webmasters. Quote:
of I believe 9 (or was it 6?) front end web servers, a pair of NFS servers, and I think another auxilary server for MySQL etc. That's working nicely, so the current version will scale OK on a large cluster of the type Webair builds (which are done right, BTW, if anyone is in need of a clustering solution). I believe it's OneHungLo, who posted in this thread, who has a geographically diverse cluster running Strongbox and who seems to be very happy with it. He has servers in different cities clustered, so we can work with just about anything. On the other hand, very large sites of the type that are normally put on large clusters do have some differences from smaller sites and that's why we're writing some new Strongbox components such as an incredibly fast database system custom designed for storing and processing the data that Strongbox uses. Overthe next 30-60 days we'll be readying a version of Strongbox that runs like nothing else on very large sites. |
Interesting..Strongbox has been getting lots of good feedback lately.

Tried strongbox but I removed it after one day because it stopped my customers from using download managers. Apparently it could have been enabled, but at a greater security risk due to the way it uses sub domains.
To bad |
glad to hear it works for ya

Someone tried to login as "xxxxxxxxxxxxx", but that same username has already been used recently by someone in other countries. That username may be on a password site or otherwise compromised. I'm suspending that username for a while, to see if this behavior stops soon. If they keep it up, I'll disable that username permanently and email you to let you know. Gotta love that :thumbsup |
Dirty D approved.
We have Strongbox protecting our members area, on a load-balanced pair of servers. Ray supplies awesome support and his product is worth far more than he charges. Anyone paying monthly for a solution, should contact Ray immediately. |

I've been using strongbox on my paysite for two years now, I tried pennywize and proxypass and they brought nothing but complaints from my members.
And the support I get from Ray is simply amazing :thumbsup |

We have been using it from the day it was released and have never had any problems. The reports and email warnings you get are excellent :thumbsup

Are there any sort of password protection scripts that works in a similar way if you don't use htaccess auth.?
|
Strongbox does not use the old type of .htaccess authorization. ;)

I'm not using htaccess at all but a session based login. Can strongbox also protect such sites ? |

Ya, we used Strongbox forever, and I have nothing but great things to say about Ray and his program.
|
someone from strongbox please get ahold of me .. I have some questions .. thanks .. :)

I just switched one of my sites over from Pennywize to Strongbox and I like it a lot more. Way more control, and the email messages are so much friendlier ;)
Ray & Ali were very helpful. |
I love reading and learning!
Aron told me we were switching back to Proxy Pass, says whatever we are using wont allow some of the paid feeds to work correctly. My question is will strong box allow paid for feeds 2 work. I guess the reason is the Members URL keeps changing or something. ::: Shrugs ::: XoXo TeenDeja |

with Strongbox most of the time. There is a setting that can be set so that most any download manager will work. It's a little more secure to have the setting at it's default, though, which requires them to browse the site with the same browser that they logged in with. |

the link to the feed slightly if the feed provider a) uses very poor referer based security and b) doesn't allow for you to link from different subdomains. |
I use both strongbox and throttlebox. They've already saved me more in bandwidth than the cost of the products. :thumbsup

THe phone number on our web site, 1-979-530-1300, rings at the office, my home, and my cell, so I can be reached there almost any time. One rare exception will be this afternoon because I'll be on site at Merill Lynch setting up a system for their traders, so I won't be able to talk on the phone much. Of course we can also always be reached via email at [email protected] . |
I am new around here and I?d like to know something about strongbox. So, it is a security system that works with some media devices in windows. My question is if it works with Win DVD player and if there?s necessary to use it with this DVD player, the only DVD player on my PC. Help me out please. :helpme

I have a client who is currently using ProxyPass on an old Apache 1.3 setup.
Does Strongbox's apache module have support for transparent pass through with the new Apache 2.2 series authn_dbd modules, or would it need to use a hacked up mod_auth_mysql? (I'm not interested in a collection of Perl scripts, nor am I interested in supporting them. :thumbsup) |
Quote:
Strongbox replaces mod_auth_mysql and other authentication modules. |
