Tech question: Can a router slow down a connection?
I recently upgraded to the 6Mb speed option through comcast. With my main pc plugged straight into the cable modem, my speakeasy tests run about 5600/580. When I add my Microsoft router into the loop the tests drop to 3900/530 and below. I've reset and recycled several times. Others in my zip code are receiving 6Mb on tests.
Anyone have any insights? |
yeah, a router will most likely slow you down, unless you upgrade to a faster router. those extra steps knock nano-seconds off your speed
|
check with the brand of the router. Did you have to install software for it?
See if you can config. it there. A friend had Speakeasy, they blocked a lot of his emails so be warned! p.s. How about a partner account? |
your pc is the router???

Hey PK...
Many routers are total trash. MS, Linksys, etc.. Many try to add in custom encryption, packet crap, etc.. I recommend you check out the Belkin line of routers, go with pre-n if you want wireless. 800,000 sq foot of broadcast, super fast, very secure, and easy to use. http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatSecti...tion_Id=202570 |
Don't think Microsoft makes a faster router. This one is rated to 54Mbps. Got this one because it's one of the few that allows multiple XBoxLive connections without problems. Just trying to figure out of the speed test is flakey through the router or if it's the actual connection.
|
PK - the 54mbit/sec only denote the theoretical maximum packet throughput through the router. If a firewall is activated, each tcp packet will get processed in order to determine whether it should be passed through or not. I suggest turning it off.
|
try upgrading the firmware first
|
if you do not need the router, just get a switch, it will be faster.

i didnt even know microsoft made routers :(

Can't disable the firewall that's part of this router. |
aren't those at EOL?

Obvious solution would be:
- Connect directly to your computer, run the speed test. - Connect through your router immediately after, run speed test. If its a big difference, its %99 odds that its the router. :2 cents: |

Direct to pc is 5600/580 through router is 3900/530 |
My son purchased a MS router, and it was complete garbage, I would probably lean more towards Belkin or Linksys myself.

Go to Lynksis, buy an unmanaged Switch for around $100 that has 100Mbps and a 1Gb connection port.
Throw up to 28 connections into it, it'll hum. |

I used a Linksys prior to buying the MS one. Linksys router gave the boys fits when more than one of them was playing XBoxLive. With the MS router, I've had 3 separate xboxes playing wired and one on wireless with no problems. |
Hey now, SOME linksys ARE junk. The blue and light blue ones STAY AWAY From.
But the ones I posted, they are good man. hey Persian do you use ICQ? Ive only ever gotten 3 galleries approved on your site, was wondering if I could talk to you sometime... |
