ICANN is pleased to announce the designation of two new sponsored Top-Level Domains (sTLDs), .JOBS and .TRAVEL. The ICANN Board approved the designation at the 22nd ICANN International conference in Mar del Plata, Argentina. The announcement marks the culmination of the independent evaluation and contract negotiation process for these two sponsored Top-Level Domains that was outlined in an ICANN request that solicited proposals for new registries. The new registry operators are Employ Media and Tralliance Corporation.

As the process for selecting new sponsored Top Level Domain (sTLDs) continues from a pool of ten applications, ICANN has already entered into commercial and technical negotiations with the following additional candidate registries, .CAT, .POST & .MOBI. Discussions continue among ICANN Board and Staff regarding the evaluation of five additional proposed sponsored Top Level Domains (sTLDs): .ASIA, .MAIL, .TEL, .TEL, & .XXX.

An update on the status and progress of the additional applicants will be made as they proceed further through the process. Please address any media enquires to [email protected].
so it looks like in a few months we will have .jobs and .travel domains

I am still missing the point of all the new extensions. Looks like the only purpose is to make certain people rich, nothing else.

.com, .net and .org have been here since the beginning, 3 years ago ICANN introduced .biz, .info and some others like .museum or .pro and I am sure most people haven't even heard of the last two.

What's the point of a .travel or .jobs, or .mail ( :warning ) domain :question

I am sure when the surfer who is used to .com will see a www.hot.jobs domain, he will only think the adress is fucked up and he will type in www.hothobs.com anyway...

I don't like these new extensions. To me, it's just more registration fees I have to pay to protect my trademarks under the various extensions. Where will it end? Why don't they just make an extension for every word in the dictionary?

Oh and since this post also mentions .xxx, before someone makes a stupid comment about it, it's been already discussed in this BIG thread and it could be one of the worst things that could happen to this industry.

hehe, I hope you are joking.

The web already matured..and people are used to the current domain system.
Why change something that works perfect?
Why introduce something that brings confusion and noone will use it as their primary adress anyway?

Well, I'm only half joking.

I don't want them to bring in any more extensions because I think it's annoying, pointless, and just adds confusion.

These new extensions are an absolute money grab. Somehow I doubt the travel industry is the one pushing for .travel to be approved.

Will Expedia.com or Travelocity.com now change their domain to Expedia.travel and Travelocity.travel? Obviously not, but will they be forced to go and register those extensions to protect their trademark? Yes.

Useless money grab

.XXX is not going forward, despite it's 'under consideration' status, ICANN never officially rejects sTLDs but keeps them under consideration forever. .XXX is under consideration and won't be accepted
