What are some features you would want in a custom built home?

Name all the small or big features you'd want in a custom built home.

I would like to have some sort of water flow through the house, like a 2 lane swimming pool or a stream from a big water feature, would make the house seem more open.

Napolean 04-13-2005 11:32 PM

Very important: Structured Wiring.
You want to make sure EACH AND EVERY ROOM has at least gigabit certified ethernet jacks. Always do 2 per room for future expansion. You could also do fiber, but that is really planning ahead. :-)

What you want is a central wiring closet, with all the ethernet coming into it
so you can centrally manage it all with a switch and etc.

ALSO, specify that you want to be able to handle at least 6 phone lines
from the phone company, so the house needs 6 pairs of telco wire run looped to each room..... (I would make sure they do the phones in a star configuration and not a loop through the entire house though as the star configuration provides central management as well as easier and more flexable wiring possibilities)

:-)

Thats all, of course, if you want your house to be ready for the current and the future. AND it should not cost more than like an extra 1000 bucks.

Theo 04-14-2005 12:05 AM

basketball court :)

We recently finished building and I actually decided against doing this, because all my computer activity is centered around the office. My daughter is too young to be using the net (in fact she's unborn for a few more months :1orglaugh) but I had already decided that putting in ethernet wiring was going to make it too easy for our kid(s) to get unsupervised net access.

Of course in 13 years time she'll probably be hooking up with the latest wireless craze and daddy will have no idea.

SplitInfinity 04-14-2005 09:44 AM

You could always proxy or firewall her net services. :-)

eroswebmaster 04-14-2005 09:47 AM

Simple things that you just don't find much of in homes.
Plenty of cabinet space in the kitchens, and bathrooms.
Plenty of closet space not just in the bed rooms, but hallways when it comes to linen closets etc.

I would also make a large kitchen that has a center island with plenty of space to move around..and COUNTER TOPS..very important. ..I would also include maybe an area close by whether it's a breakfast nook, or counter with stools that people could sit at while things are cooking...the reason...think about all those family reunions, holidays etc the kitchen becomes a huge focal point during those times.
Lots of cooking and chatting going on.

Large bathrooms is another must.

Tala 04-14-2005 09:49 AM

Fireplaces, one in the living room and one in the master bedroom. Sunken tub with jets in master bath. Billiards room with wet bar. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the upstairs loft. Full basement, finished. After all, I must have my dungeon.

Nismo 04-14-2005 10:33 AM

billiards room with custom wetbar to mimic a sports bar setting, theatre room, wine cellar, gym with lockers & gym style showers, marble everywhere, atleast a 4 car garage with wooden doors, the list goes on...

Rinaldo 04-14-2005 10:36 AM

Poker table/game room... sick marble looking kitchen with a huge island. Storage everywhere... I want nothing to be out in the open, makes teh place look larger and cleaner. Projection TV in the game room. A movie theatre taht seats 12 or so in lazy boys, it's all going to happen to I had a designer friend from college make some drafts for me for a free password for life lol

Houses that are too large aren't good on upkeep so I wanted a 4500 square foot home. Nothing too large but if the place is open it won't look smaller than an 8000 sqaure foot home.
Also I want japanese rice paper sliding doors so that when no one's home I can open it all up and make the place look 100% open and large, when I want privacy I can slide the doors shut and alls well... sunken in bed so that it's at floor level

Jacuzzi inside with a sliding glass enclosure so if it's cold outside I can open it all up and feel the air.

Screaming 04-14-2005 10:38 AM

the list would be way to long

She'll probably be nabbing free wireless access off our neighbours, or using it via her portable cell/PDA. I can't control that. :winkwink:

Then again hopefully she'll be one of those girls who hates computers so she never uses the big bad internet. :winkwink:

Some really good ideas here

Sly 04-14-2005 11:55 AM

A game room and theater room for sure. A bar/lounge area would be nice too, could integrate that easily with the game room.

That sounds great. I'd love to live on a secluded forest or bush block, in a house that integrates into the area and environment. My major concern would be bushfire.

An undulating landscape would also be very nice. This is the view from a lookout I found by accident last year:

http://media.sensationcontent.com/ro...O200-15min.jpg

I hope to buy land around that area within the next couple of years. :thumbsup

SplitInfinity 04-17-2005 09:13 AM

" the kitchen becomes a huge focal point during those times"

VERY TRUE! That was a good tip about a large kitchen space.
I thank god every time we have a family function that my kitchen is big big. :-)
Without that, I would go nuts.
