Video Content Producers.. advice needed please

I need to shoot video in MPEG4 format for some mainstream stuff I'm playing with.

Would you recommend shooting in MPEG4 or regular miniDV and encoding to MPEG4 later?

I am looking to buy a prosumer type camcorder (recommendations? it will be outdoor stuff) with MPEG4 capability but thinking I will have to carry a stack of memory sticks if I shoot in MPEG4?

Thanks :thumbsup

Why would you limit yourself by shooting anything in MPEG4?

Shoot it on MiniDV then you have raw/high end footage for your current needs or any future ones.

As for camera suggestions....Do you have a price range in mind?

shoot it straight m/dv and then encode to what you want. If you want good low-light go sony vx2100 - If you need a little better zoom, go Cannon GL2. I use both and both are A+ - you can get them new for $2500+/- or ebay used for $1800+/- -- there are also lots of accessories available for both. :thumbsup

I thought it would save encoding time later recording in MPEG4 but yeah I wouldn't want to limit myself since preferred formats seem to change.

Price around $2000. Checking out the 2100 and the GL2 now :)

always shoot in the minidv full res. Next year mpeg4 might be old news and windows 10, 11 and 12 will come out, you'll need the avi format to re-encode

Then grab a Sony VX2100 while you still can. The zoom factor is not a big enough difference to justify the quality loss of going with the GL2. We are shooting up close porn and not wildlife videos afterall. :2 cents:

Actually mine will be mostly outdoor nature and sports stuff so the zoom will be a factor. Would you go with the Sony and add a better zoom(if that's possible) or the Canon?

That's up to you. The Sony has a 12x optical zoom and the Canon has 20. The Sony has larger CCD's and does better in low light. These two factors impact quality.

My personal opinion is that the GL2 is a peice of shit and there is a reason that more Adult companies go with the Sony.

Most people who own a GL2 and like it have never owned the Sony or worked with it much so it's not a fair comparison for them to make. I have used both quite a bit.

Perhaps if you read the entire thread then you would know his needs are for larger zoom and outdoor use....Not well lit porn studio use.

Try paying attention instead of kissing Tony's ass.

OH, well, i don't know Tony, never spoke with Tony, not even paid attention that post was from a "Tony", i just think the Pana kicks Sony's ass anytime, at least for the VX2100 for sure, but even for PD150, PD170... that's just my opinion... as for ass kissing... i usually kiss only those asses i really like, and the owner must do something real good to me to deserve that... :girl
