How safe will I be, on a scale from 1 to 10, 1 being most unsafe and 10 being really safe. I've heard that it's kinda dangerous over there, but it might be worth it.

DUDE, the most dangerous thing here are the whores that wants your money... as long as you don't go in the bad places at night alone... (but i guess any place in the world is the same at that), you are prolly safer than most other places...oh... and there are a few more things... don't eat off the ground, and don't try to do drinking contest with our national plum brandy...LOL

HAHA, I didn't mean it quite like that, I imagine Bucarest is similar to any major city, but I am really hell bent on going to Translyvania (if you really live there, then you're just the person I want to talk to), but everyone I talk about it to (mostly Europeans) say that there are a lot of gypsys and people who will try to rob me and/or cheat me when I buy stuff (which is pretty much the standard for a foriegn tourist anywhere in the world, so my main concern is getting flat out robbed). If I stayed in Bucarest and went to Translyvania for a day would I be pretty safe as an American tourist?

yep, absolute no problem, just be safe as usual, don't carry big amounts of money with you, avoid public transportation (there's where the pickpockets live), change money only in a BANK, never on the street, buy stuff from shops, not from ppl trying to sell you things on the street, (not there are many of those..), as for rural Romania, if that's what you want to see in Transilvania, better have a romanian with you, as rural ppl usually don't speak foreign languages.. (maybe some german in Transylvania), anyway, if you really want to come here, i might be interested to be your guide, as long as i can speak with someone from the biz... ;)

Transilvania is much more safer than Bucharest.

We just came back from there... we have some local guys there so we where cool, but i did not feel unsafe the whole time i was there... saying that I am from nottingham which is by far the worst place in the UK to hang around.

As long as you don't go round pretending you're a big-shot, flashing your money about you'll be fine. Use to live in Arad, and stayed in Sibiu for 3 months. Whats even cooler is that you can tell people that you were born in Transylvania and they don't believe you. :1orglaugh

don't even try to compare criminality rate here with the numbers in US. we stay much lower, maybe because they don't allow regular people to have guns. so no lunetists, no kidnapings...
most problems (police reports say 80%) are made by gypsies, they're like 10% here.

Well, when i arrived here, used to go to clubs and ordering liters and liters of vodka... i can tell u that i've noticed ppl looking at us in a very "strange and unhappy face" like "look at these tourists with their money!!!".

I understand them totally. Play low profile, be nice with the ppl and u'll discover that romanians are among, from my own experience, the most adorable ppl i've ever met. They're very welcoming and warm ppl, trust me.

Thought i'd stay in Romania for some months and finally, i don't even wanna go back to France!!

I feel more safe here than in Paris... and i don't plan to move from here.

I live in Bucharest, and i plan to move to Brasov next year (some stuffs to finish before in Bucharest).

I just returned from Prague and I can tell you romanians are kids comparing to czechs.
they tried to cheat me many times when I tried to buy refreshments or souvenirs.
