Cats are hardcore, when they're not babied by their owners they're real scavengers. Down at my wife's parents' farm, the barn cats eat dead baby cows and shit. It's gross, I've puked more than once down there.

I would wait until they finished eating it, and then eat them.

There's tons of organisms that would eat you when you die. It's not just cats or dogs. Even the 'harmless' microbes in your gut will start eating you from the inside out when your death triggers a destablization of your stomach enzymes, etc.
