Not sure, I mean, there are animals that sleep standing up, fish have to keep swimming when they sleep else they die, maybe we only sleep laying down because we are so used it? Maybe we can train ourselves to sleep standing up, I dunno. It might be fun to try though.

BlueWire 05-01-2005 09:34 PM

I cant get truley ALL the way asleep. But in the corner of my shower I can rest my head and in no time at all i'll have been in there for an hour and the water is cold

I think i'm just like half awake-half asleep...but not sure

Horses can literally "lock" their legs...it requires no effort...

"Horses have a unique system of interlocking ligaments and bones in their legs, which serves as a sling to suspend their body weight without strain while their muscles are completely relaxed. Thus, horses don't have to extent any energy consciously to remain standing - their legs are locked in the proper position during sleep."

although some horses lay down to sleep

Fish dont techniqually stand, the float.
Some animals cant lay down, and they have the advantage of four legs.

It can be done :)

It happened both while in army and in the shower when I was younger (I've never been a morning person).

prime 05-02-2005 04:36 AM

I've seen a middle aged man slept for an hour standing up,
we were drinking beer at that time :)
:1orglaugh

Napolean 05-02-2005 04:40 AM

I've fallen asleep sitting up in a chair... multiple times

back in high school I only slept maybe an hour a day, worked 2 jobs... I would be sitting trying to pay attention (sorta).. black out and next second everyones looking at me.

So it *might* be possible to sleep standing up :)

Vitasoy 05-02-2005 04:46 AM

No but I did try sleeping with my head upside down agaisnt a wall.

Rui 05-02-2005 04:53 AM

Birds have an equal ligament locking system in their legs AND toes. That's how they sleep in trees on windy nights.

As for humans, I've slept many a night standing up in Nam. And in the rain. It's not an impossible thing to do. With out the "locking systems" of other types, we have to depend on "locking" our frame against a stable object, like a tree or wall corner.

DutchTeenCash 05-02-2005 05:59 AM

webcrawler 05-02-2005 06:09 AM

I've started to fall asleep while standing, but then I started to fall forward which woke me up.

EroticySteve 05-02-2005 08:46 AM

How about sleepwalking? Any sleepwalkers here?
