You think a company can sell a full 50 cent album for 1.98 or 10 cents a song legally?

shuki 05-12-2005 07:50 AM

There is no way they are officialy licensed and selling at those rates

samsam 05-12-2005 07:50 AM

http://Limewire.com

easily the best IMO

Can you explain further?

I was under the impression that sites like that were not officialy licensed.

So the reason they are cheap is due to the license price in russia?

Correct me if I am wrong but does this mean that if apple or another company wanted to set up a site in another jurisdiction they could pay the license fees that apply in that country? Why don't they do this then?

I am looking to be educated not looking to start a fight. Just thought I would add that in here because sometimes posts have a strange way of comming off harsh when they are not trying to be.

hey shuki i made a post on this but i dont see it appearing duh

ok i'll repeat. Some time ago I contacted a EU agent that handles about 90% of the copyright music in that country and requested info regarding licesing songs for ringtones. I was informed i'll have to just pay them 10 to 12% of the net sales. Do that in other countries and you'll see much higher rates.

Licensing rights vary from country to country and yes mp3search.ru have their songs licensed in russia. Making a generic commment they are illegal isn't valid. Do a search regarding cross-bordering licensing and the legality-illegality of them and you'll find some interesting info and aspects. This operation has been up for 3 years or so with no problem, I would assume if they were doing such bad to let non-russians buy tracks they would have been gone for good. Maybe i'm wrong.

Interesting....I will retract my illegal statement and do some more research on this.

Thanks for the info, very useful for me :thumbsup
