YARGH! There be a all of 'em codec download. Have divx, and xvid? Those two be most common.

I have the same problem myself..I gave up and started using winamp

Chio, that would be something if the WMV files had a bad codec but I wouldn't put anything by Microsoft. For the MPEGs, you most likely need XviD, as the standard MPEG1-2 codecs are already installed by default.

You should pick up a good codec pack, I use K-Lite Codec Pack but you can get another one from http://www.doom9.org

This could be hardware related as well..

edit: Winamp is absolutely horrible for video files, use as last resort only. Also, windows media player 10 has been out for a whlie, consider downloading it :)

Fortunately, still got no problem with my WMP..

Streaming or downloaded?

I've seen this problem with streaming video, but never downloaded vid.

If you're watching a streaming mediaplayer 9, and you're getting black screen, you probably have a firewall up that shouldn't be up - either too high or redundant (which can also be a bad thing).

If no firewall, check your privacy settings in IE - any higher than medium blocks a live stream - video, that is, it won't touch your audio.

:)
