ATLANTA, Georgia (AP) -- A man wanted in Florida in the death of his girlfriend climbed an 18-story crane at a construction site and remained there Thursday morning as authorities tried to talk him down.

The man got onto the crane around 5 p.m. Wednesday and stayed there, indicating he was contemplating suicide, Atlanta police spokesman Sgt. John Quigley said Thursday.

Florida officials identified the man as Carl Edward Roland, 41, who was wanted by the Pinellas County, Florida, sheriff's department in the slaying of his former girlfriend.

The badly beaten body of Jennifer L. Gonzalez, 36, was found in a pond Tuesday.

However, Atlanta police were not releasing the man's identity -- or any other information about him -- Thursday morning.

"I don't want to give this guy any notoriety. I don't want any copycats," Quigley said. "I just hope he comes down safely."

The intersection where the construction site was located was closed, snarling traffic in Atlanta's Buckhead neighborhood. Police negotiators tried to talk to the man throughout the night.

Quigley wasn't sure how the man got onto the crane, saying it was possible the construction crew had left for the day.

They've had Peachtree street blocked off since last night. Traffic is totally fucked up. Already one of the worst spots in ATL for traffic. Now it's a nightmare.

Maybe I'll take a camera and my laptop down there for lunch. There is a Johnny Rockets next to the construction site. I could eat a Hamburger and watch.

Sounds like a nice way to spend an afternoon. Chilling, eating a burger, and waiting for a guy to jump to his death.

Almost at 24 hours now. This guy isn't giving up easily.

The cops stayed on the crane with him all night. Maybe they gave him some food and drink. I wonder if he has taken a shit or piss from a couple hundred feet up.

With temperatures about 60 degrees F at 10 a.m. Thursday, Roland approached authorities stationed on a platform at the end of the crane and accepted a jacket before moving back a few feet and sitting. Shortly afterward, he moved again -- farther out on the crane.

Authorities have been giving the man food and water, an Atlanta Fire Department official. To keep him from falling asleep, officials have blared a bullhorn occasionally.

Police said Roland has a sharp instrument with him.

Authorities initially planned to set up a net or air bag underneath the crane to catch the man should he fall or jump, but they concluded that plan wouldn't work because he was too high up, the fire official said.

I hope this guys dies soon, I'm going to a Braves game in Atlanta Fridayand staying around there....

I just drove by there as close as I could get. There are about 20 news vans and Satelite Dishes in the street. Hundreds of people standing around. Every Major news organization. People are set up with Lawn chairs and Tripods with cameras. It's quite crazy. There are a bunch of bars with decks across the street filled with people drinking beer waiting for something to happen.

When he does jump though, I bet you guys would be the only network to show the uncensored video of the splat.

he's been up there a while, saw it on the 11 o'clock news last night. guy has got to be getting tired, bad place to doze off I imagine.

Someone did that here, when a dude was jamming up traffic on the bridge during early moring rush hour. The cops aressted the guy for "surporting a criminal act" or something stupid like that.

We can't talk anybody into going down there and just sitting there..waiting for the guy to jump. But, if he does...send me the uncensored video ASAP :-)

A few blocks from Buckhead? We're in Buckhead village. But really, these days...Buckhead sucks. When the ghetto crew took over the clubs and started shooting people, it became an entirely different place.
