Any guitar players in the house?
I'm looking to buy a new electric next month. I've been out of the music scene for a loooooong time and want to get back into playing. Any recommendations?
:GFYBand |

I haven't shopped for a while so I'll only try to give you some general advice:
If you're playing metal/rock, shop for a guitar with a Floyd Rose locking mechanism. You want both Humbucker pickups (paired). If you're playing Blues, the guitars you'll be looking at should not have a Floyd Rose locking system. You want atleast one humbucker and atleast one single pickup. :2 cents: |
It all depends on your music and budget.
Ibanez makes the fastest guitars - but they sound like shit. Good value though. If you're willing to put up with swamp ash or plywood or whatever they make the bodies out of. Gibson makes great sounding guitars but they play like shit. Fender makes guitars that both play like shit and sound like shit and yet somehow manages to get them to sound good on recordings. Except the Yngwie version - which obviously can't play like shit. A telecaster has a very unique sound and you'll know if you need it. Paul Reed Smith makes guitars that play really well, sound great, and cost way too much. And their newer ones have this giant neck block at the joint that just suck. BC Rich makes guitars that play like crap, sound like crap, and look totally cool. Jackson used to be cool. So did ESP. ESP has a Kirk Hammett signature series that is like 500 bucks. Probably not a bad deal. Epiphone makes cheap version of Gibsons, is owned by Gibson, and you probably won't be able to tell the difference yet. Kramer just did an Eddie Van Halen reissue that is probably worth looking into - it's not that expensive and if it was good enough for the Great One, it'd probably be good enough for you. |
You can rarely go wrong with a Fender Stratocaster.
However, in the end it's like wine...it's all about personal taste. The best thing to do is to just drop by a few instrument shops and try out several different guitar and amp combinations until you find what you like. ADG Webmaster |
HOw much money do you want to spend?
What kind of amp are you going to be playing through? What kind of music do you want to play? What guitars do you think look cool? |
If you want to buy online, the best dealer I know is Jason at http://www.drumcityguitarland.com/in...oductTypeID=12
Do not buy anything from a guy named Ed Roman |
I mainly recommend Fender Strats and Ibanez. Can't beat the rickenbacker 12 string either! :thumbsup
|
I always liked the Strat. myself.

depends a lot on how big your hands are and what musical styles you intend to play.
and if you need good acoustic ability along with electronic. IMO small hands, easy fret work = fender jazz, maybe gibson for acoustic/electric mostly acoustic, maybe ovation with an internal pickup for beautiful sound of you can just buy a pretty noisemaker if you are into musical theater (as many/most electric players are) |
In all honnesty? get a vintage Les Paul off ebay or your local music shop.
|
Vintage Les Paul Is the only way to go! Don't get a new one, a 50s or 60s model will sound like heaven! Spend the extra bucks and get vintage!!!
|
Depends on the type of music you play.
A Vintage Les Paul and a VOX AC30 amp does wonders :) |
That's one thing I would love to learn
|
The Schecter guitars rule.
|
John Petrucci's Music Man model is one of the best guitars I've ever played. It's my main guitar. Very versatile for many situations, but still probably more for the dedicated shredder than the casual player. It's also pretty pricey at upwards of 2 grand.

i love playing the guitar once in a while

BC Rich is for 80's hairbands and people that don't know playing one looks 80's hairbandish instead of metal. |
malmsteeen strat. havent played in in 6 months though :(
Duke |
depends on what you wanna do.
les pauls weigh a ton, but they have sustain for days and other players feel you have cred if you play one. strats have sharper edges on the neck, the classic strats make a quack perfect for blues ibanez makes some inexpensive guitars that feel good in your hands schecter has reasonably priced guitars with great finishes on a budget? get a rogue from musiciansfriend.com or a carlo robelli from samash. they actually aren't bad. i have a carvin bolt, and it feels nice, and has a gorgeous finish. you can order the color and finish you want online custom. looking for accoustic? i prefer classicals, but if you want a dread, maybe an older gibson. the wood sounds beautiful as it ages. or a taylor sounds good. there is no one right answer... |

You should of stopped after this ?It all depends on your music and budget? |
