Do you prefer .zip or .rar?

Gonna zip some cropped thumbs for ready hosted galleries and was wondering which is used more by webmasters.

JayJay 05-30-2005 02:58 PM

zip for me

BigRod 05-30-2005 03:02 PM

Definitly zip

mardigras 05-30-2005 03:05 PM

zip for webmaster stuff definitely.

I only deal with rar because of newsgroups. :upsidedow

Libertine 05-30-2005 03:06 PM

Raawwwrrrr!

kernelpanic 05-30-2005 03:07 PM

I have WinRAR on my desktop, as well as rar tools on my servers. So, as a compression format, for me, zip is obsolete.

However, since you're archiving media, you won't get much compression from either zip or rar, so it makes sense to put them in the more ubiquitous format (zip)

i dont understand the large support for a nonstandard protocol?

zip is supported by all.. and although rar is a bit more efficient who gives a shit about those extra % compression with current dataspeeds?

After Shock Media 05-30-2005 03:10 PM

Have both on my pc and our servers, so doesnt really matter to me. I chose zip since I am fairly certain nearly everyone has it.

Many people have rar, and it only takes 30 seconds to install if you don't.

Why not?

fris 05-30-2005 03:13 PM

zip tar.gz rar all the same i ftp it to my server and use whatever :)

Terry 05-30-2005 03:14 PM

I dont care either way I have winrar and winzip .. but if I have to make one, I zip.

BillyHoe 05-30-2005 03:15 PM

I'd go with zip, it's more of a standard for newbies.

Apache_A 05-30-2005 03:21 PM

If I'm downloading to my PC then ZIP if I'm uploading to a linux server then rar

nico-t 05-30-2005 03:22 PM

perfectodollars-gabrio 05-30-2005 03:30 PM

rar is better, however if you wanna stay sure that everybody opens that, use zip, everybody on earth should have it.

for non-media stuff, rar offers a much higher compression ratio

bdld 05-30-2005 04:22 PM

.zip all the way, never downloaded a rar file before.

Monique Niccole 05-30-2005 04:25 PM

I have both WinZip and WinRAR, but I prefer .zip files. I always see it as a pain in the ass when I have to open a .rar. No idea why since it takes the same amount of effort and time.

Babagirls 05-30-2005 04:32 PM

definatly prefer .zip files
i downloaded the rar program and only used it for about a week before i uninstalled it.
not too many things come as .rar , most commonly used are zip files.

Za Ha 05-30-2005 04:56 PM

Thanx for the votes
Decided to go with zip cause thats what I used as a n00b :)

Vitasoy 05-30-2005 06:33 PM

.rar all the way.. Winrar rocks.

reynold 05-30-2005 07:02 PM

I'm not speaking for anybody's behalf but I always prefer Zip.
Most webmasters also do..

Sams_gfy 05-30-2005 07:32 PM

zip

:pimp

Furious_Male 05-30-2005 07:35 PM

Either or for me. I guess if I had to choose I would say Zip.

Basic_man 05-30-2005 07:38 PM

I prefer .rar, but .zip is more standart !

sniperwolf 05-30-2005 07:39 PM
