I spent 8 hours a day for 1½ month vacuuming the boiler room of a power plant. Walking around in 60° celcius and with noise levels so high I was almost deaf when I was done.
That was a fucking nasty job and it was when I decided that manual labor is not for me.. |

MIne would have to be building fibre glass camping trailers.
Damn that stuff was so itchy and the glue was giving me a buzz daily, so after 4 weeks I had to quit. |

Worked a summer on a fucking hog farm. Talk about stink. Nothing worse than hot piles of pig shit on a summer day. And that shit gets in your nose and in your clothes and never seems to go away, no matter how hard you scrub

Let's see...
When I was in h.s. and first got my license, worked at Denny's as a bus boy for all of 8 hours. Left, and never came back. Even for my check. But I would have to say the summer I spent in college working at a Neuro unit. You have people with head injuries repeating same sentence in your ear all day, taking swings at your nads, treating life as it depended on pop and cigarettes. Um yeah... :disgust |
One summer I packed blueberries, that's the worst job in the world. Fo every pint you got .15 yep 15 cents. They would look at them by the crate ( holds 20 pints) and if you didn't have them right you had to do it all over again. The bug's were every where. One day I thought I would pick them instead of packing boy was that a dumb move.
I now don't eat blueberries. :( |

When I was 15 I worked for a farmer to pick up cucumbers. We would arrive in the field at 7hre with our pillow. To pick up cucumbers everybody lies on a platform pulled by a tractor... about 15-20 kids aligned. You need a pillow under your chest because the position is very uncomfortable. Cucumbers have spines so you have to wear plastic gloves. In the morning there is water on the leaves and it gets inside the gloves. Our arms would become all red, a kind of allergic reaction.
They would ask us to come even when it rained. The tractor would get stuck in the mud and we would have to push it. We were entirely covered with mud, soaking wet and freezing. Or once, there was an electric storm.... still, the boss wanted us to stay there. Once, we saw a tornado starting to go down, at the end of the field... The conditions were hard, but the worst was the heat. We were roasting on the platform. The manager had to splash us with buckets of water. Of course, he was watching us. He was walking behind the platform and when he would see pickles in your lane he could threaten you to lower your salary, or fire you. We had one day off a week, one half an hour off for lunch, and a 5 minutes break every hour to piss. It was from 7hre to 4hres, for a month. It was far from the city, it woudl take 30 minutes to get there. We were paid 4$/hour. And they were taking 4 buck off our pay check every week, to make us pay for our pair of gloves, even if we brought it from home. Most people I know quit after a few days. I stayed there the whole month. |

I worked with developmentally and mentally challanged teenagers for 2 summers.
Spent most every day getting beat down by a 200+ lb. 23 year old with Downs Syndrome. Loved that job and hated it just as much. |
This is most GFYer's "summer job."

My serious answer. I never had a summer job that sucked.
I spent 5 years working at Six Flags Over Texas and it was one of the funnest jobs I ever had. I was in the games dept. Started when I was 16 and ended up in the repair dept. We built and repaired the games you play to win stuffed animals etc. I was then moved to the "Arcade Shop." I was the assistant foreman and my duties directly were managing the crew that was responsible for the care and maintenance of all the remote control boat and car sites in the park. We had 3. People dropped a quarter in a slot and then they were able to drive cars and boats through miniature villages etc. The great thing about the place was the fact that there were 1,000's working there and you met hot chicks hanging out during the summer. There was a party just about every night at someone's house , even when theree wasn't there was always a group of 50-100 hanging out drinking beer behind the games wharehouse. I actually considered getting a degree in business and sticking around and maybe pursuing a career in management there. The money was good. The General Manager of the games dept was making at that time '82 around $75-$100K a year plus bonuses and the guy was like 28. We didn't have internet porn to make money off of ;) |

I feel the same way about strawberries. bending over and picking the damn things to hours at a time for 3.20 a flat (8 pints) mind you I was eating just as many as i was putting away so that slowed me down a lot. back breaking labour let me tell you. If you've never picked strawberries before the plants grow only a few inches off the ground. stupid strawberries. Haven't touched them in 12 years |
