Since when were they american bands?

pussyluver 07-10-2005 11:24 AM

That list is so full of bullshit and is age biased!

Noway Jimmy Buffet and The Coral Reefers don't make the top ten!

For that matter Glen Miller, Count Basie, Christ even Lawerence Welk.....

Big following for all those at the time. The Welk show still plays every week even though he's been dead for years.

GirlV 07-10-2005 11:26 AM

Pearl jam is a great band, but I wouldnt put them at #1. and Green Day needs to be on that list somewhere.

When I first here my parents sent me tapes of it so I could show my husband what he was missing. They still watch it weekly and thought I wanted to show him how good it was.

Anyway, you have a point in what makes a band. Damn right Glenn Miller should be on there if we are doing all time stuff. However, people always put together these lists from their own perscpectives and it usually is stuck in their time frame too.

However, as a hug R.E.M. fan I am pleased that someone in that article called Automatic For The People the best American rock album ever - my taste agrees. It is my faveorite album of all time. Every song works perfectly in its place on the album.

I hope you are being sarcastic. Hell why not add Def Leppard and the Beatles

Anywas that list is fucked because whe you rank things and you have a tie you skip the next number.

20: Bon Jovi

I always like the Stone Temple Pilots, they're American aren't they? I'm pretty sure they are.

Lynrd Skynyrd
Bob Seger
Styx

I like that Journey was listed so high.

if you click on the link there is a secondary list on the page and Heart are on it. They went suck in the 80's but any band that did Crazy For You and Baracuda and has a BBW on guitar ranks high in my book ;)

Heart was a Canadian band I thought-
Based out of Vancouver NO?

Or was it Seattle?

I am betting Canadian though

However I think this list is more or less composed of the biggest MONEYMAKERS of all time for US bands

They pretty much got it right when you calculate their royalties as well as grosses from live shows-

I am really surprised however that Guns and Roses wasn't closer to the top-

Metallica nd Grateful Dead and two juggernauts-

They were the original Seattle band. Ann Wilson even collaborated with Alice in Chains a couple times (she did backing vocals on their song Brother)

They are a Seattle band, did some studio work out of Vancouver though.

Heart = USA

Their lead singer, Anne, is the bbw singer.
Their guitarist is the slimmer blonde sister Nancy.

And they rock. :D

I'm pretty sure they've made a lot more money then the Replacements. And the Ramones, while influencing tons of artists, never really sold very many albums.

TheGoldenChild 07-10-2005 02:05 PM

If it were a UK List I'd have to say
this would be my list

1).Beatles
2).RollingStones
3).Pink Floyd
4).The Who
5).The Kinks
6).Depeche Mode
7).Paul McCartney and Wings
8).Genesis
9).Traffic
10). Moody Blues

anyone care to add the other 20?

This is just off the top of my head and I know the music biz fairly well-

Curious to see who else I haven't thought of yet-

not bad except you're missing Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. I personally wouldn't put Traffic, Kinks or Moody Blues on there...

CDSmith 07-10-2005 02:09 PM

Creedence Clearwater Revival
Grateful Dead
Crosby, Stills & Nash (Young = Canadian)

Aren't Hall & Oates USA?

BBW is an understatement!
"I saw them a few years back and she looks like she is pushing 300 lbs-

What a shame - they were so hot back in 77-78 when I was a kid, I used to drool over them.

It was even more depressing seeing Stevie Nicks a few years back though-
I was in the front row and approached her during Rhiannon"
and gave her a rose-

She was so touched- she invited me backstage
:-))

I still have great memories of all the Summers I spent back in Cleveland at the Blossom Music Center
One of my closest friends ran it, and I had tix for every show and backstage passes.

I saw and hung out with some unreal people- I culd write a book
:-))

Long and short of it-
Both Heart and Stevie ROCK
and all of the chicks are now sober-

It's almost like after they stopped doing cocaine they immediately BLOW UP.

I just saw Stephen Percy of RATT down here and I almost fainted-
He was introduced to me at a bar up the street and he looks like a fat landscaper-

DOH!

I was looking at pollstar numbers from an old magazine a coupe of weeks ago that's why that stayed fresh

I AM AN IDIOT for not mentioning Sabbath and Zeppelin
excellent point

I was thinking about honorable mentions : like
a few of my favorites-
Squeeze, New Order, and the Cure as well-

they sold MILLIONS of albums
