Londoners give me a hand - London Airports

So I will be attending a meeting in the very heart of London (close to Picadilly) and I am booking flights ...
and I can choose Gatwick, Luton or Stansted.
Which one is closer / better communicated with the center?

ssp 07-17-2005 04:54 AM

I think Gatwick is the closest to the center. Then comes Luton and then comes Stansted. Don't pin me down on it.

Heathrow will always be the best choice though. Too bad you can't choose that one.

Not a Londoner myself but travel there regularly. I tend to use Stansted as that is the only one from my local airport. Both Stansted and Gatwick have a direc rail link into the centre of London. Luton probably does as well. checkout stanstedexpress.com

All 3 are pretty much the same.... Luton probably has the longest journey into town because there is no "express" service as far as I know.

Heathrow is of course the best and cheapest with a tube link into the city.

Gatwick, marginally. But they all have good links (express rail is fastest and reasonably priced), so choose by ticket price and convenience.

Heathrow is the main airport and closest: the three on your list are all further out and the landing charges are a lot less, which is why charter flights and low-price airlines use them.

Thx all :thumbsup

Well I can also choose Heathrow but it's more than 2x the price so I was considering all the rest.
For what I 've been googling, I think I'll pick Gatwick.
Still browsing though ...

Gatwickexpress.com takes 15mins less to get to its station (Victoria) than the stansted express and this is probably a little closer to where you want to be anyway.

stansted is a nicer airport on the whole, not as crowded

There is also city airport but that only serves Europe (I think). Technically Gatwick and Heathrow arent in London. However, both have high speed one stop rail links straight into the heart of London. Heathrow Express arrives at Paddington and the Gatwick Express arrvies at Victoria. Both train journies are really easy and pretty fast. Stanstead comes in at Liverpool Street.

Personally I I was only coming in for the day I would come into Gatwick, straight to Victoria on the Express, then grab a cab to Picadilly. The cab journey from Victoria to Picadilly will probably be less than $10 and take less than 10 minutes.

Stanstead is probably your best choice price wise.
There is a direct train that takes you to Liverpool St. and then it's a few stops by tube or 10/20 mins by taxi.

I have to agree with this. I have been on extended weekend in London, just got back less than 1 hour ago. Take the plane to Gatwick, and then the Gatwick express directly Victoria Station. It take about 30 min. and itīs Ģ12. That will take you right into Victoria Station and you will be minutes from Picadilly. Take the tube og a cab or just walk up there, itīs not far at all.

I had a great weekend BTW, London is really something else. Will be going back soon, thatīs for sure.

Gatwick and then take the gatwick express till victoria tube station
