at my regular coffee shop. There's pictures on the wall, and the one closest to where you pick up the coffee is a photograph of the Great Wall of China. Behind me is a little girl, maybe 11 years old, and her mother.

Little girl to her mother "Mom, what's that picture of?"

Mother to girl "That's the China Wall. It seperates communist China from regular China."

I turned around, shook my head at the mother and explained that the Great Wall of China is an ancient defensive structure meant to stave off barbarians and that the Berlin wall seperated West and East Germany after WWII.

What's wrong with people these days? If you don't know, tell tell your kids the wrong shit.

She kind of stumbled on her words for a second and then immediately agreed with an "oh yeah that's right". Normally I wouldn't say anything, but you just know that little girl would be in school one day arguing with her teacher "No not all of China is Communist, that's what the China wall is for!".

Actually, no I didn't. My personality would suggest that would be the way I would do it, however I was not so much trying to embarass the mother, I just wanted to correct the bad information. A few years ago I was in London, England and I met some girls from Cleveland, Ohio at the hotel bar. They were doing some travelling around Europe, and said they want to go to Paris, and asked how they should get there. I told them they have a few options including catching a ferry. They asked why they would catch a ferry, and I said because Paris is across the water, to which they replied "What water? Like a lake or something?", to which I replied "across the English Channel, it's part of the Atlantic Ocean", this totally had them confused and they asked "but we already crossed the Atlantic Ocean, we're in Europe", to which I replied "yes, but we're in London, which is in the UK, which is an island seperate from the rest of Europe", to which they replied "it is?"

I believe that there's more and more distribution of false information in our society. I NEVER rely on information from another person - it is most likely false or at least inaccurate.

This was an electricity and magnetism class, all vector calculus physics. I doubt any 8th grader would know why the sky is blue if you asked them.

I was at the L.A. zoo with my daughters. we were over by the hippos and this mother tells her children to look at the Rhinos. I was going to say something, but my 8 year old daughter corrected the women. In a much nicer tone of voice then what I would have used.
