Driving the I-5N

I am driving the I-5 from southern cali all the way to Canada in 2 weeks and I wanted to know if anyone knows of any really cool sights to see on the way up? I want to avoid the PCH at all costs (I hate lights) but will connect up if there is something cool.... anyone have suggestions?

Sly 08-13-2005 11:07 PM

Why? That sounds like a horrible drive. Why not just fly?

StickyGreen 08-13-2005 11:09 PM

You should drive up the coast if you're gonna do that. It'll be really awesome. The weather is so nice right now. I'm exactlly halfway between vancouver bc and seattle... Let me know when you're around..

I've done that don't remember where i was going on the I-5 , not all the way to canada though . You gotta be really
watching your signs soon as u miss your exits its a nightmare to get
back on track .
u are coming back van right ?

BradM 08-13-2005 11:49 PM

The states has a lovely highway system and it is basically impossible to get lost on them. Every time I have taken a wrong exit I can jump back on track in no time. It's really great.

Northern California is absolutely beautiful, but I tell ya, there are some STRANGE folks up there. I went through a logging city once and couldn't believe some of the stuff I saw. Not one decent house or car in the whole city.

Holly 08-13-2005 11:57 PM

I'm calling the border patrol and telling them you have explosives hidden in your trunk and in your anus.

You do not know what you are missing, The CA coast from Santa Barbara up is great. If you like to drive, Hwy 1 thru Big Sur is so much fun. Once you get into OR you might as well work your way to I-5 via 199 to Grant's Pass, then you can crank the rest of the way

lloyd 08-14-2005 01:09 AM

i gotta do the same drive in a couple weeks but the other way, but i'm fully taking the pacific coast highway. probably skip out on washington just hit the 5 through there, then once i hit portland head for the coast and cruise on down from there...

ummm, why? If he isn't going scenic, 99 has ZERO to offer. I have driven between LA and Sacramento numerous times a day at times . . . if going for speed --> I-5

NaughtyRob 08-14-2005 01:14 AM

Nice... I drove the I-5 from San Fran to the Oregon coast before. Great drive once you get up north. Very pretty.

yeah, basicly. i assumed he was looking for things to do and maybe stop by hooters and have some wings along the way. when im looking for speed i take the 5 and when im looking for things to do i take the 99. besides kettleman you wont see shit beside random stations until stockton which sucks espically if you arent a fan of gas station corndogs

The OR coast is quite boring compared to the CA coast. There are a couple places in south OR that were pretty cool, but not worth the time compared to Big Sur

This is true. It's very ugly between LA and Sac. Goes on forever, looks just as blah as the mile before, etc. etc.

Shasta Lake in Redding is pretty. If you wanted to meet for Lunch at the Rolling Hills Casino in Corning, which is right on I-5, I'd be up for that.

BradM 08-14-2005 11:44 AM

Are there tons of lights along the 1? I have a standard (manual) tranny. :\
I might just do it but I don't want to stop every 200 ft.

Going that route will be REEEEAAAALLLLLYYYY damned long. I hope you want to take your time.

PersianKitty 08-14-2005 11:48 AM

If you're into touristy things.. the Spruce Goose is in McMinnville, OR. There's Mount St Helens off I-5 in Southern WA.

Watch "the Aviator" and you'll really want to stop to see the Spruce Goose. I didn't realize Howard Hughes hated that name.

No, just take the 405 N till you hit the 101 N. It will be open road until you hit Santa Barbara, then it get sporadic, but they will be quaint little towns.

When you hit San Luis Obispo, 101 will split with 1. You want to take 1. It takes a little longer, but it is probably some of the most scenic part of the country. Definitely the most scenic of CA.
