The rewards of parenting

Every once in a while, your kids tell you something that makes it obvious that they have been paying attention. Tonight, was one of those times.

My daughter and I went out for dinner, and during the course of conversation she reminded me of something that had happened back when she was going to UC Davis.

She had become friends with some guy, then he introduced her to this girl he has started dating, and she became friends with the girl. The guy and girl ended up breaking up, and things got weird in the relationship with the guy. Thing is, he had a couple of books that belonged to my daughter, and while she really wanted the books back, she did not want to approach him.

I asked her how much the books would cost to replace, and she said it was minor amount (under $20). I told her that if she could get out of a weird relationship for under $20, it was a helluva deal, and she should be glad to get off so easy. She agreed, and went on her merry way.

Well, apparently one of her girlfriends is going thru a breakup with her boyfriend, and the boyfriend has one of the girl's DVDs.

My daughter asked her if the DVD cost less than $20. It did. My daughter then told her, what I had passed along to her several years ago. "You got out for under $20. Consider yourself lucky."

We were laughing about it, but inside, it made me glad to know that my kids were paying attention, and passing along these pearls of wisdom to their friends.

Like she said, "even if that was the only thing I ever learned, it was a pretty valuable piece of advice."

Heh. I used that same exact philosophy on somebody the other day. Sometimes $20 is worth finding out who you can trust and who you can't.

Sometimes? $20 is always worth learning that. :thumbsup

I loaned a guy some money last Christmas who was into some rough times, had a family and a new baby. I have been friends with this guy for 4 years. I didn't think anything of it. I've probably talked to him twice since, neither time has he mentioned the money.

I don't really care about the money, but it does suck losing someone you thought was a friend.

Sly loves Nickelback.

It's true. He has their posters all over his room.

I'm sure this made you feel very warm, fuzzy and proud inside. :)

hmmm, maybe when my kids are older I'll get nice feedback like that. All I get now is my 3yo saying "this little piggy went to Wal-mart" and I didn't even teach her that.

Wow that is a wise thing to say. Sometimes we need to look at the positive side of things.

I am starting to wonder what kind of things I get to hear from my kid when he becomes a teen

SexyScribe 08-16-2005 12:32 AM

Well done, baddog. Good advice! :thumbsup

$20 is quite cheap for any lesson learned, IMO. :winkwink:

What is more important is what you tell them.

I think on a college student's budget $20 can seem like a lot sometimes, but in the long run it it only 20 Top Ramen dinners.

je_rome 08-16-2005 12:51 AM

good advice.. well, it is really overwhelming to know your kids pick up good pieces of advices from you..

every parent has good pieces of advice in their mind.. but just not all have the talent to effectively instill them in their children's minds.

emthree 08-16-2005 01:21 AM

While you have a point...
That same $20dollars could of been a resolution point

That is where the skills come in to play. :)

you planted a good seed in the mind of your daughter and you are just reaping it. she would carry that in her life and that sure is a very rewarding on your part as a parent. congrats! :)
