Yes this is very possible, happened to me at least.
I heard some basics about this so called internet thing, at first it was no worry as it was just email and newsgroups. Then I was alerted to this thing called webs. Once they were explained to me I knew right then that my adult bbs was in serious trouble and it was just a matter of time before it would die. So I got myself some internet access and told some people I needed a website. Just about nobody knew what the fuck I was talking about, hell it took me 4 weeks of calling MCI to even find someone who even knew what the internet was let alone get me access.

See I ask because I remember very well tons of link lists/banner farms and everything had a click here for more or click here for free pics. Well you clicked and you were at some other banner farm/linklist and it was nearly an endless cycle unless you clicked a damn banner. Occassionally you would strike paydirt and find 10 pictures on one page, but CJ was in full effect.
