Maybe you have just never had a good slice. I always thought pizza was like sex...even when its bad, its pretty good.

Scott McD 09-07-2005 01:21 PM

It's not the pizza guys fault though, even if you don't tip him, the pizza place still gets the money for the delivery charge...

What do i care, i hate pizza... :1orglaugh

I used to deliver pizzas at Domino's. I made less than minimum wage at $4.45 an hour. The guys at the one closer to me make $4.00/hr. I believe the Papa John's in RI make about $6 and change. How much exactly did they charge for delivery? If it's only a dollar, you should still tip him at least $2 bucks.

Gas prices are up and pizza places have said they need to start charging a delivery fee because the drivers can not make it on tips alone.

only $1.50 which is less than i would have tipped him... just don't like the fact that they include it... like restaurants that include the 20% gratuity...

Really? Hmm, I wonder if that works. Because it had the opposite effect on the topic creator here. All the pizza place would have to do is just pay the driver more money for gas. Delivering pizzas really sucked, it's a no-win situation no matter how you look at it. You'd have to be living in Manhattan and delivering pizzas to 5+ customers at a time to make any money.

Papa Johns = BEST delivered pizza!

I wish they had those here in the Philippines

Harmon 09-07-2005 01:32 PM

I usually take 20 or 30 pennies, put them in a cup and piss on them. Then I hand them to the pizza guy as I am slamming the door in his face.

Apparently overall it has helped but it will not work with every customer. Roundtable added a 3.00 per delivery charge, for the above stated reason as well. The driver said it actually is more per delivery than she typically used to get when it was averaged out. This coming from a fairly attractive driver, who said she often does better than the guys.

Sylver7 09-07-2005 02:20 PM

They already charge you for delivery with higher prices than you would get if you ordered carry out. Then they add an additional delivey charge to give you the impression that the driver gets the money but they don't. It's becasue they're afraid to raise the prices on the pizza so they screw the delivery drivers over by adding an additional "delivery fee". The driver makes minimum wage and when they pay 3.00 a gallon to drive your pizza to you they make even less if you dont tip them. Dont tip them a few times and you'll probably get booger topping for free on your next order.

Umm every place I go has the same price for dine in, take out, or delivery except the new 3.00 delivery charge. There typically is no hidden markup.
Also the drivers here do not get full minimum wage, they get less.

Go ahead and take the risk. Just don't be surprised that if the same delivery man you stiff delivers to you again, that he will probably spit a big wad in your pizza and bury it under the cheese and a big juicy piece of pepperroni.

BTW, those delivery guys talk. If you are known as a "stiffer" throughout the delivery crew, any of them are likely to spit on your pizza before handing it to you with a big smile.

dudes back in Pittsburgh (where pizza is REAL pizza! :thumbsup ) make bank off of delivering pizza. shit, it was common for me to tip $5-$7 on any given time. they hustle ass to get your food there, the food is always good & ready to clog an artery :thumbsup

beemk 09-07-2005 02:26 PM

no wonders some of you get shitty service, you dont tip. they remember that shit. if you cant afford to give the guy a measley $3 for delivery then stop being so lazy and go get the pizza yourself. its bad enough they dont make shit for wages, then you go top it off by not tipping them.

Yeah, my point exactly. City deliveries are probably more profitable than delivering in towns.

No doubt. I hope some of the guys who replied in this thread were only joking. And some of you are exactly right. Well, almost. We didn't put shit or piss on the non-tipping pizzas, but we'd do other things... Like cutting the pizza very uneven. lol. I had a blast doing that, I'd cut the thing up like I was a Samurai! And then we'd put like very little pepperoni on it, lol. I remember when we put those hot pepper seeds in the sauce. LOL! And they never complained once! Isn't that funny. I bet they shit like hell with all those hot pepper seeds buried in it though.

Why wouldn't the pizza place charge a delivery fee? It costs the pizza joint more money to deliver the pizza to your house, of course they're going to charge you. Not only do they need to pay an extra employee, but they also need to pay for miles/gas. All of those extra costs cut into the profitability of the business.

The pizza place I order from is 2 blocks away from my house. I think its a $2 delivery fee, then I usually give an additional $2-3 as a tip. Whenever I phone in an order I'm told it will be about an hour but the pizza is always at my door within 30 minutes.

I'm really quite amused that so many of you have a problem with a $2 delivery fee. My biggest qualm with eating out is it takes too long. Drive to the place (15 minutes), order food (30 minutes), eat (30 minutes), then drive home (15 minutes.) One outing and we're talking at least one and a half hours erased from my day. By spending that $2 on having pizza delivered I can save that hour and a half and continue doing whatever it is that I'm doing. Time is a very valuable commodity to me.

No wonder so many have a hard time in this business. They don't think.

But you're in Brasil. I'm sure the system there is a bit different than in the USA. I know it is entirely different in Europe. Waiters are paid more than minimum wage over there. Here in the USA waiters get paid around $3 dollars or so. For pizza delivery drivers here they get anywhere from $4.00/hr to $6.50/hr.

Quotealex 09-08-2005 07:32 PM

I charge the delivery guy $10 because I live in Downtown and I know finding a parking space in my hood is very hard.

Well, I can't say how much they get, probably the minimum wage. But it's certainly not that common to tip in Brazil. I don't tip delivery guys, but I tip other services where I feel it's appropriated.

Peaches 09-08-2005 08:34 PM

So....if they raise the prices at a restaurant you don't tip either? Makes no sense to make the delivery person suffer. :(

Damn, you guys were pretty nice considering...

I remember when I use to work in the pizza joint, and a call would come in for delivery to a known "stiffer". All the delivery guys would be begging to take that delivery because they couldn't wait to get their revenge by spitting a big wad in the pizza. One sick crazy fucker that worked there was so fed up with a well known stiffer that even stuck his finger up his ass and rubbed it under a piece of pepperroni. But that night, the stiffer happend to tip for once. lol

Actually i have the perfect person here to set you straight ( a former pizza delivery guy )

Pizza place's make more delivering than anything else. They don't pay for gas/mileage ( well actually every pizza place set's their own rules but most of the big ones don't ) . But to boil it down into easy to understand terms , he ( the pizza delivery guy ) would make $250-300 a night , and pay for all expenses. Plus they usually pay them minimum wage ( and that just covers taxes basically because its mandatory to claim 10% of sales as tips) so they dont actually get a check.. just tips.

So he would clear 45k a year after expenses.

SmokeyTheBear 09-08-2005 09:05 PM

and the driver pays taxes on 10% of his sales regardless of if you give him a tip. So if you order a $20 pizza , the delivery driver has to claim $2 as income ( regardless of if he actually gets a tip ) so from that $2 he may have to pay 60 cents to the government. So basically the driver needs about 60 cents just to break even.. ( minus expenses )
