When does marketing become Spam

I have been accused of being a spammer

I consider what I do marketing

I DO NOT send out ANY unsolicited e-mails, icq's, AIM or other

I DO NOT do "Drive By spam" on Any board i Post

I do not start usless threads about lame products
(well except that cc thingy that was My bad)

So where do you draw the line

The line is when you start o iritate the shit out of people with your silly schemes.

What's in your signature is Marketing... buying an advert spot is Marketing... having a link in your profile is Marketing... putting a small blurb in return correspondence emails is Marketing...

starting a whole thread about how great your product is in a forum that is NOT about how great everyone's product is, is spam.

These boards were created to post programs and Ideas

I dont just put links here or cut and paste I put out IDEAS as well as products

and the response here has been HUGE compaired to the complaints about spam

AND amp a company I rep IS buying ad space here because of MY suggestion so I do bring in Income for this board

If you approach people in the same business with a product that is relevant to them it's marketing, as any business man will tell you.
Whether it's a mail shot, phone call or some one knocking on the door it's marketing.
SPAM is collecting ANY email address and just sending out an ad.
We get accused of spamming, by people who have registered on our site. When we are informing them of new sets going up on the site.
Do these guys just sit there and wait for passing trade?

Don't be so sure about that... I see all those things as spam nowdays. AT&T right here in Fremont California was just successfully SUED for repeat phone calls from telemarketers to a woman who did not quite see it as "Marketing". Yes... they are going to pay... dearly.... for making those calls.

If it's UNSOLICITED... it's spam in my book. And that means whether it's a phone call, someone knocking on my door, an email, a thread on a bbs, or whatever.... if someone isn't asking for the information... you're spamming.

True... but I don't have the option of NOT seeing the thread...

however... that is where it becomes the owner of the board's decision to determine what is allowed and what isn't. This particular BBS, has it posted clearly that they allow one time PROGRAM announcments... not repeated posts about how great something is. To my understanding, that means if you are a regular poster, you are allowed to announce a new program to make people aware of it.

Now I may very well be interpreting that wrong... I'm really not the right guy to ask here about gfy's rules.

But I know what I personally allow at another place. A bbs is a little different than the other methods listed as it's not like a phone that each person individually owns / payes for.... each board may have different guidelines and you can just invent your own. You gotta follow their rules.

That's all I'm saying...

but as far as the phone, door-to-door, email, icq, irc... etc... I see it as spam if I didn't ask for it.

Case in point:

I get several phone calls a day from people trying to sell me all kinds of shit.... they usually last approximately 2.7 seconds before I slam the fucking phone down without so much as a "No thanks."

Maybe I'm not the business wizard that charly is... but I can tell you none of the people that have ever made unsolicited phone calls to me have ever done ANY business with me.

Yep... real effective marketing there...

Any message board would suck if it simply became a place for anyone and everyone to post "opt-in" advertisement threads. If one person is allowed to post their program all over the place, then everyone will have to be allowed to.

Then there will 100 threads a day, all "opt-in", all pushing one program or another.

At that point the messageboard becomes useless.

Besides... shouldn't a profile be enough? If you are truly a regular poster, you obviosly will talk about your biz at one point or another in SOME conversation... people get to know you after a while.... if they really are interested in your program or wizzamahatchitcongripulator module, they'll go check out your profile or what's in you sig to see what you got. Or they'll ICQ you, or email you ASKING about it.. or they'll post a thread ASKING about it....

spam comes in many forms and it's fucking evil.... every goddamned email I get from some crackhead spamming a porn site, I turn all red, blood pressure goes up, and I swear, if I could I would rip their fucking heart out and eat it.

Whether you consider a full post on a message board advertising your product spam or not, there's another thing you need to consider:

If you're pissing off the very people you're trying to market to, then that's bad marketing. PR and marketing have to coincide with one another, and part of PR is tact.

But I get 10-15 e-mails

and TONS of ICQ all Inquireing

so is the Vocal ones on the board that rule or the

Buy an ad spot if you have something to promote.

Why would you think YOU are allowed to "market" all over the place but everyone else has to buy an ad spot to get their product or service out?

Or put it in your signature like everyone else.

But spamming a bbs should NOT be your primary method of marketing... if it is... you won't last long... because you only get away with it for a short while before it gets you banned.... and then what? Start sending out the emails?

I'm not 100% certain ... but I think I am interested in one of those ... Tam is just too dam rough !!! :(
