Fox counter

Anyone ever tried it?

I saw it on a lot of big boards (actually 2...lol) and I would like ot know if its counts hits with success, or it counts them using the sextracker method (actually counts 60% of my ytraffic..compared to my server stats...lol)

anyone?

nemesis 02-24-2002 06:11 PM

They have a pop-up on their stat page which is for webmasters.
the pop-up says;
"Add dialerking.com to your site and you could win $20,000

Dialerking.com pays the highest rates. Currently $2 per min USA!

Goto dialerking and signup. If we choose your site, and you have dialerking on it as well as foxcounter $20,000 is yours!
Contest ends May 1st"

What kind of contest is this? If we choose your site you will get $20.000... Sounds a like joke...

Techie Media 02-24-2002 06:11 PM

I currently have it in my footers on both Lightning Free and Girls Host. It is counting pretty well, I have no complaints at all.
Thumbs up to Fox Counter and their team:thumbsup

I am trying the counter, and after the first few days when Lightning crashed their servers LOLOL they beefed up everything, and now I haven't had any problems at all. It seems to be very stable and as accurate as all the other counters. Yes I agree the dialer pop up is a bit much, but who really cares, just close it if your not interrested.

I got this spammy email from DK in my mailbox, when I tried to reply, the hotmail address did not exist and the mail came back:(

nemesis 02-24-2002 07:04 PM

They could put a pop up with a cookie. Getting it all the time is boring...

hopefully they will apply this simple idea.

Rod 02-24-2002 08:35 PM

ok, I see
thanks for your replies :)

But, about the popups....if surfers sites has popups, why webmasters couldnt have some also?

:thumbsup

burn 02-24-2002 08:39 PM

Shit I was about to sign up but if they have pop ups in the stats area then I will no use them. Gay terds

Forkbeard 02-24-2002 09:55 PM

I'm using them but last night and today the counters have been loading very slowly -- invariably the last items on my pages to load. Middle of the night last night they were also loading stats pagers very slowly.

Plus I am like to SCREAM at that stupid popup. They didn't have it when I started using them. Seeing it once is fine, seeing it once per visit to my stats would be fine. Seeing it every dang time I click around inside their stats reports is gonna make me tear all of my hair out at the roots! :ak47:

Actually, what it's really gonna do is make me move all my counters to somebody else, if it's not gone in about three more days. I play enough whack-a-window trying to find good TGPs -- I don't need it from my counter provider on every click.

Somebody didn't think that idea all the way through.

foxy 02-24-2002 11:01 PM

hey guys,
it is a contest. so the pop up will remain for a few more days then it will disappear. As for slow loading mmmm...very strange but we will look into that. Thanks for letting us know
:)

Forkbeard 02-24-2002 11:19 PM

Ah, very cool. Since the popup says the contest runs through May, I was afraid the popup would be there that long too.

As for slow loading of the counter on my pages, that's gone away now. The stats pages seem back to normal. Thanks for providing a good service!

Forkbeard 02-25-2002 05:53 AM

Alas it's doing it again in the wee small hours of the night. At around 3:15 AM Alaska time (4:15 AM Pacific) my counters were taking seven or eight seconds longer to load than anything else on my pages, and navigation inside the foxcounter stats pages was taking twenty seconds or so for every click. Are you guys running middle of the night database maintenance tasks on the same box as your server? If so, you might want to rejigger thread priorities or something.

foxy 02-25-2002 06:29 AM

forkbeard,
we are onto this and will have this fix. Thanks for letting us know ;)
We are tweaking things as the demand for our counter is incredible. :thumbsup

Forkbeard 02-25-2002 12:45 PM

You are most welcome. Counters are zippy today. Thanks!

Forkbeard 02-27-2002 12:14 AM

Alas the growing pains have returned. In order, starting about four to five hours ago:

The stats pages started loading very slowing (5+ seconds.)

Then the counters started loading very slowly (7-10 seconds or more.)

Then the counters stopped loading at all.

Then the stats pages stopped showing new hits (an obvious consequence of the counters not loading.)

Then the counters started loading INSTANTLY. Yay!

Urk! The stats pages still were not registering new hits.

After about a half an hour of that, the stats pages reset themselves and started showing pure zeros for today's hits.

For awhile they fluctuated -- a page refresh might show zero hits or it might show the old totals.

Now the stats pages are back to showing pure zeros -- has been like that for an hour or so now.

Hope these growing pains get sorted out...I LIKE fox counters, they are handy and useful and, of course, free.

Foxy, perhaps a system status update is in order? ETA on return of the stats?

Thanks!

Demand is incredible for a counter whose stats are not showing a single hits. Now that's incredible!

I'm the tech in charge of the foxcounter project. Sorry for the weird behaviour with our servers - as you have mentioned there has been a bit of tweaking going on in these early days. We have all the grunt we need in the engine department but are working on getting the absolute best speed we can on displaying stats for the webmasters. This invariably means that at times we are moving data about and this in turn causes some speed issues sometimes. The hits that you were missing earlier will return :) as we have had the main db servers running all along. There's about an hour of downtime though while we make some fairly serious adjustments. We're nearly done with the tweaking so I hope we don't scare too many away while we make the fox rock! :)

I sincerely apologise for the annoyance this has no doubt caused but rest assured we work around the clock on these servers and we fully intend to provide the best counter service on the net. Sounds like a sales pitch I guess - what I'm getting at is that we are dedicated to the job and we have some great techs back here looking after these servers.

Forkbeard 02-27-2002 01:35 AM

Total downtime is now pushing six hours, at least from the user perspective. So mebbe you are being just a little optimistic in describing the upgrade process. Howsomever, I really do appreciate you coming here and being responsive to user concerns. And it's good to hear the stats will be there when you guys get back up, although obviously that won't include the ones from the brief period when the counters were not loading at all. Thanks for the update!

Yes- I think it's a 'developer' thing. When I was freelancing I generally used to tell clients that if I said it would take one week to allow two :). It's taking a little longer than expected to make these alterations but we have just started bringing some of the front end servers back up to speed again.

Fantasyman is your counter able to track referrers on a site that uses frames?

in a word, yes :)

SR 02-27-2002 02:17 PM

But it when placed in the mainframe it seems that the counter counts the framset as referrers since that page loads the mainframe with the counter on it.

fantasyman 02-27-2002 02:20 PM

SR

I just emailed one of my techs - as soon as he responds I will post it here. :)

fantasyman 02-27-2002 02:34 PM

SR

here is his response - if this code doesn't come out right just email [email protected] and he'll send you it in an email

simple :-)
in the cashcount HTML code you will find the following code:
,referrer,']',msg,'">'); // -->
replace it with this
,parent.referrer,']',msg,'">'); // -->
this should work

SR 02-27-2002 03:19 PM

Thanks so far but it seems that it stopped counting referrers now.
I'll e-mail the tech

Thanks

fantasyman 02-28-2002 11:54 AM

I think you were mistaken - have you figured it out?

About that popup that pops up EVERY time somebody navigates from one page to another inside your stats review pages:

Quote:

Hey guys, it is a contest. so the pop up will remain for a few more days then it will disappear.
Um, that was posted on February 24, roughly a week ago. Can we have an updated forecast please? Like, with a specific date?Because my tolerance for playing whack-a-popup is getting pretty thin. Thanks!

KC 03-03-2002 05:31 PM

SR -

Just an FYI - PayCounter also has support for tracking referrers of the frameset's parent.

If you look at the area where your HTML code is picked up, there's a link at the bottom for sites that use frames. Simply use this code instead and your referrers will be tracked properly inside of frames.

Thanks,
-KC

adult webmasters whining about pop-ups that they see... now that's interesting :1orglaugh

what makes ya believe that we're somewhat different than the surfers? YOU sells THEM stuff. the sponsors sell YOU stuff ('cause, yeah, when you use a sponsor, you're actually their client).

why shouldn't the sponsors use consoles? 'cause we, the adult WM, are a different breed? get a life... :Graucho

the same techniques that apply to surfers, apply to webmasters... but some of the latter are more stupid than the porno-petes. jesus, a brag like "we pay on time" (as if you're not SUPPOSED to) brings in like 25% more WM sign-ups to your proggie...

some sell porn, others shave SUs... but there's ALWAYS a client and when you're such, you have to cope with the same marketing techniques that you have implemented as a standard in the industry.

It might be...let me know if you see me do it in this thread, because I haven't yet.

What I'm asking about is when the Fox Counter people are planning to honor their commitment, now several days past due, to remove the popup.

Quote:

I dunno. You're arguing with a straw man -- I never said they shouldn't. However, all the good adult sites have figured out that popping a console with every click drives surfers away. Quality sponsors limit the number and frequency with which surfers are assaulted by popups. Why shouldn't a quality service provider do the same thing?

Once per visit would be plenty, especially when marketing to an audience that visits multiple times per day.

Oh, goodie, my first good opportunity to do this:

gee, i don't normally talk to people who scan their content from penthouse but i have decided to make an exception for you...

at first, i don't recall having mentioned your name ANYWHERE in my reply. and yet you jump and start explaining things. you do have reading problems, right?

at second, you urged me to "GO FUCK YOURSELF". nope, thanks, i'm really not after your hairy ass. there's lotsa love in my heart but i'm kinda into the women stuff :)

bro, i sense lots of tension in you. go to gary, ask him for a goat or 2 and chill out :))

Forkbeard 03-04-2002 01:04 PM

Naw, the little descriptor field is incorrect.

Actually, I scan all my content from Cosmopolitan....
