where can i learn some serious SEO techniques

all kidding aside, i've learned some basic essentials, but now i need to move into more specific areas. for example, how to work my robots.txt correctly, what scripts can be used to help my ranking, whats a good tool to search for lesser used key words, and more.

Yea.. stick to "and", "the", "but" (only with one "t"), "or", "now" and that kinda stuff. It's the "in between words" that count.

I dont think robots.txt is very effective now days
Lame advice but get the most links to your page you can with the keyword you want to target as the anchor text

monkeysnap 10-24-2005 11:09 PM

robots.txt is very good . . . . for keeping spiders away

candyflip 10-24-2005 11:12 PM

I have done my own searching and my own digging. Trial by error and all that fun stuff.

It's starting to pick up and pay off.

There are lots of places to start and lots of "techniques".

heheh - At the New Orleans SEO show I tried using Hurricanes (a very strong rum drink ... at least, I think it was rum ... oh, and no pun intended) to get some of those guys talking. Apparently, they get loaded pretty well on their own.

Also met the Google engineers, but that was useless. They had the look of a hot blonde at a bar who knows that everyone in the place wants a piece of her.

But I did pick up some useful tips, tools and access to some private SEO boards ... but the big lesson was that White-Hat SEO = Newbs (or however you spell that term these days). If you really want to make a dent in the SERPs, you've got to get ugly.

How do people choose their keywords? I feel like I'm not aiming high enough.

I use the overture search to get an idea of how many searches were done for a particular word & then jot down the numbers for a couple of them (not the top ones). Then do a google search to see how much competition there is on the first page. If it's big guys that have been around for years until page 5, I move on to the next term.

But being on the first page for a term that only gets a few hundred searches a month... :(
