What's a good 300mm lens for a Digital Rebel camera ?

I just picked up a Canon Digital Rebel XT and I'm looking for a 300mm lens. I see the Canon 75-300 F/4.5-6 III USM SLR Lens which is $219 or the Sigma 28-300 ASP 3.5-6.3 HZ for $399, plus I'm sure that there's others out there.

The camera is only being used for home use, not anything professional, however I'd like to get something that's gonna do good for me :) Is the cheap Canon lens sufficient or is it better to go with something better ? I'm not big SLR guy, so I figured that I'd ask you, the experts :)

This may also be of interest...

(Note that I've never used this lens... my camera would chew it up and spit it out)

In general you can find a lot of useful info by doing a google search for "EF <lens range> review" or similar.

stick with canon...IMO, I find that a company's products work best with other like items....

Just watch the IS lens's, paid 480.00 for mine and it does not take a clear pic. It's going back tomorrow. :(

canon lenses are great, but for non OEM lenses i think sigma represents best value/image quality compromise.

if you want a great zoom covering alot of focal length area the sigma 50-500 is hard to beat, it's apochromatic and very fast autofocus.

check ebay.
