Its about 50/50 A good player wlill win over the long term though.

But you can also make the point that when skill levels are matched, luck becomes a bigger factor

Choosing the right opponent is a skill also.

Skill as in counting cards..other than that..it's a fluke

Being good at poker rests on 2 important factors.

#1. I wouldn't call skill..... but maybe knowledge?
Knowing your odds.... etc. How good is your hand etc...

#2. A mix of bluffing skills and luck (if 2 equally good players match up, the one with the good hand got it by the luck of the draw... Now if the one with the sucky hand can bluff it's gonna be interesting.)

has nothing to do with luck, you gotta know how much to bet and when, thats where the skill comes in to play.

I would never go into biz with someone stating poker is all luck. Either they are really dumb or too lazy to research what they are talking about. Either one is a bad sign.

I hate gambling, losing money sucks. Doesn't mean I don't play poker though.

If you are playing agaisn't less skilled players, then it's skills... but when you are all at a certain level, the luck factors become bigger

It has been proven in a court of law that poker is a skill game.

This is why poker games for money are legal even in states where gambling is illegal.

you can be lucky and win when you have no skill. you can be very unlucky and lose depite lots of skill.

skill is what enables you to take advantage of the lucky streaks or keep alive in the unlucky streaks. Winning a tournment involves a lot of luck (ie burning people on the river rather than it happenig to you).

it's considered a game of skill - that's why it's legal to play in L.A. - but it's luck too - sometimes the better player just gets beat becasue the weaker player hits his card

I agree but in almost any large tournment the winner got lucky at least once or twice by catching a card on the river that kept him in the game. It might have been early on in the tournament not at the final table but it still happened in that tournament enabling him to get to the final table and win.

I think you need some of both. If you are unskilled or unlucky, you gonna lose.

Yeah, I've made a little over $500 in the last 2 weeks playing on Poker.com. If you know what you are doing you will finish in the money in 75-80% of the online tourneys that you enter.

luck is getting the right cards, skill is knowing how to play them well.

You make MUCH MORE money by knowing how to play than by what cards you are dealt. Only you know what cards are in your hand. I have won countless pots with shitty cards by making others think I had better cards then they did.

More skill than luck. Enter a few tourns and you'll either realize this or keep living in denial.

Luck is a factor, but a skilled player will come out on top over time. The thing about poker is that it's not always about the cards. One of Doyle Brunson's most famous quotes is that he doesn't need the cards to win a tournament, and it's very true.

The house ALWAYS wins in the long run... but without skill, you're screwed.

I play in the casinos a LOT since I live in LV. I usually get in with the best hand and get sucked out about half the time. It goes in cycles. You've got to know what you're doing, but luck is a big, big part of it.

it's somewhat close. You see a lot of people that just started playing the game at final tables in tournaments. I think ytcracker will probably agree with me that aggression is more important than luck, good or bad. And you have to know where the fine line is between very aggressive and foolhardy. It's a tricky game.
