The city state of Genoa held sway over the island for centuries before ceding Corsica to France in 1768 to help pay off a debt.

Napoleon born in 1769.

1 - Was Napoleon French or Italian (Genoese)?

On 15 May, 1768, France and Genoa signed a treaty, on the terms of which France was to take possession of Corsica and keep it until Genoa could pay back what it owed to France. In reality, France bought Corsica, spending 40 million livres. Then on 15 August of the same year an edict was passed linking Corsica to France. Certain of Napoleon Bonaparte's detractors declared that he was not French because he was born in 1768 and not 1769, and that his date of birth had been falsified, it being unthinkable that the emperor of the French not be French himself. However, no serious proof has ever been produced to challenge the accepted date of 1769.

Seems like he was born before that gay sounding place was made apart of france. therefore...he is not french by definition. only in the heart of you fairy french homos.

He meant as in race, creed...he was not French by blood. That is a well known fact.

While not technically of French heritage, his "military genius" was exhibited and tested while leading the FRENCH army, not the Corsican army (did Corsica even have an army?)

Thus he is described as a French military genius for that reason.

A better way to word it would have been "He was a great military genius of France", naming the country he represented rather than implying he was French, which as you said, he is not.

Capiche? :D

Mike Okitch 12-06-2005 12:03 AM

Yeah, so he wasn't from France and Hitler and Schwarzenegger both where born in Austria. So what?

CamRabbit 12-06-2005 08:29 AM

That's exactly how they should've worded it.

Dd you even read what you just quoted?

"no serious proof has ever been produced to challenge the accepted date of 1769."

And since there's no serious proof, you feel as though you can declare he was actually born in 1768 and was thus not French? Of course his detractors are going to make up shit about him. Are you not at all familiar with politics? Find me a serious piece of evidence that the man was actually born in 1768. He was French. This thread is stupid.

check your facts kid. He was born in Corsica...which even though the French took over during the time, he was not French. This is a widely known fact.

But that missquote is pretty funny :1orglaugh

je_rome 12-06-2005 06:48 PM

no need to stress that NOBODY GIVES A SHIT!!!

pornguy 12-06-2005 06:48 PM

When he was born the island belonged to italy, so he was italian.

Just like Hitler was not german.

Webby 12-06-2005 06:48 PM

Sheesh.. this thread still active? :1orglaugh

Who cares whether he was born in Turkey or Finland? The little man was a bit hit as a military planner. Least he had a clue which is more than can be said for a few present day assholes.

Oh this "thing" from retards about the French - they always need something to hate! :1orglaugh :1orglaugh

Meanwhile... get back to work and try and get two signs this month!

chodadog 12-06-2005 06:52 PM

What don't you understand? Corsica was ceded to France in 1768. Napoleon was born in 1769. Corsica is a part of France. By your logic, a Californian isn't really American because the area now known as California wasn't always part of the United States.

This is exactly right.

And does it matter? Between the 16th and 18th centuries in Europe there were constant wars between nations some gaining terriroty at some points and losing at others.

I'm reading The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers by Paul Kennedy right now. It's absolutely incredible how much fighting was going on in the pursuit of economic, national, and religious power and domination. I guess it's never really ended from the Habsburgs, to Napoleon, to Hitler in the 20th century.

I think of the Netherlands as a happy place full of pot smokers. Back then they were involved in so much war, lol.
