Just back from watching Narnia

I have to say that I wasn't all too excited to go see it but my friend really wanted to go so I went with him. I was put off by the talk of heavy Christian overtones. For some reason I was the only girl at school that didn't read the books so while I knew a bit about it I was coming at it pretty fresh.

It was certainly a kids movie and was clearly aiming at being 'LOTR-Lite'. That said, I enjoyed it and most of the kids in the audience when I saw it were six and under and none of them cried through it so it must have been working for them too.

While the story isn't at all the same I found myself thinking that this was this generation's Neverending Story. It felt a lot like that in the way it was brought to the screen and the kids trapped in a mystery land thing.

At times the word 'twee' kept popping into my head and some of the cgi was a bit ropey but it wasn't overwhelming and again it is more obviously for kids than some of the other cross over movies out of late.

The Christian tones didn't hit strongly until the last half of the movie but when it did it really did. I said to my friend that if I was God I would sue for plagiarism. All that said, I was only wise to that because I was older and knew the bible story.

I would give it 3 1/2 stars out of 5 from an adult perspective but I am sure younger eyes would have given it higher.

I saw Neverending Story a couple days ago - boy that brought back memories of my childhood.

Then they had to go and butcher it with The Neverending Story 2

I am taking my kids to see it Saturday, so I am glad to hear the good reviews.

The dragon in the Neverending Story II sucked bigtime. The first movie rocked, though. The PageMaster was almost as good (and a Harry Potter forerunner?) Gosh I miss those movies. Why don't they ever play Monster Squad on tv any more?

I read the Narnia books back in grade five, but I'm going to give them a quick re-read before catching the movie. I remember liking them, though not as much as Tolkein. At least they're short books. Definitely for children -- British children.

LittleSassy 12-09-2005 03:03 AM

watch on the weekends....The book was one of my personal fave. glad it turned out good tho...

BradM 12-09-2005 03:04 AM

I really want to see it for some reason... it looks badass.

Nookster 12-09-2005 03:08 AM

My girlfriend is obsessed with Narnia...we're going to see it when she gets back from Vietnam. Good to read good reviews from the gfy'ers. :thumbsup

Well, actually that is a selling point over here. It is a movie where the kids actaully act British (okay 1940's British but British all the same) and not some Hollywood British. My mother in law was one of the kids evacuated in the war..that is a big part of their modern history.

Seriously, If there is a kids movie I want to see then I try to see it in the afternoon on a school day so that I miss most of the kids. Crying and excessive bathroom visits ruins it.

I'm warming to King Kong. The more I see the more interested I am in seeing it.

Sorry I just picked up on that line - I loved Monster Squad. I had THE biggest cruch on Ryan Lambert..think it was my first crush.

je_rome 12-09-2005 03:52 AM

I have seen the trailer and I'm waiting for it to hit our locale.

Abithefiend 12-09-2005 05:34 AM

I read the book as a child and loved it; was one of my favourite stories. So I'll probably go see the movie too just to see how it compares.

gornyhuy 12-09-2005 07:44 AM

The question is: will they do all the books and make an obscene harry potter-esque fortune?

webair 12-09-2005 08:09 AM

the books were awesome i remember when i was a kid reading them..they were extremely hard to put down =))

ezrydn 12-09-2005 08:11 AM

C.S. Lewis was a great writer. He was part of an "inner group" called the "Inklings." This group also had JRR Tolkien as a member and he and Lewis were good friends.

Check out Lewis's "The Screwtape Letters." Another good one. And, yes, all of Lewis's writings have Christian overtones. Just as Tolkien's, except Tolkien was not as blatent.

If somebody writes something that people are willing to watch so much from then I am not going to deny them their (or their family) the fortume. That is earning your money.
