you think this is worth alerting the media? (drama..kinda..)

ok.

A friend of my feonsays son has a myspace. His buddy posts on the my space "I wish someone would kill the principal."

Well, another adult is surfing his sons myspace friends, kinda keeping an eye on him or what not, and they are all linked together. Well, he sees this kids myspace with the kill the principal quote on it and dont find 2 much humor in it.

He calls the principal the next day. They consider it a death threat, have an expulsion hearing and expule the kid for the rest of the year.

Now, I think this is wrong as fuck, And im thinking that maybe the media would jump on it.

What do you guys think? Call the news? Send an email over to wired?

Kid suspended over another kids post on his myspace. I can see the headlines.

Your thoughts?

Yes, contact the press and have the boy contact the ACLU.

pornguy 12-10-2005 07:05 PM

I would just let it go. because eventually that will come down to a free speech thing.

Nookster 12-10-2005 07:07 PM

"wishing" is freedom of speech...definitely something there to fight I think...call the press :thumbsup

Death threats are not covered under free speech... that being said... "I wish someone" is not a threat. It's a desire.

No threat was ever made. "I am going to kill the principle" is a death threat.

Sounds like someone doesn't know how MySpace works. Yes, this is a big story.

Then again there was an anti-government guy who got a year in jail for bomb making instructions being on his site that someone else posted there.

Sly 12-10-2005 07:10 PM

This kid got expelled for something another person posted under his comments section?

First off, why aren't the parents going to the schoolboard? That is ridiculous, even if he WAS the one who posted it. And sure, contact the media, they may as well be good for something. The parents should demand that he put back in school and the expulsion mark be expunged from his permanent record.

FunkMachine 12-10-2005 07:15 PM

"Feonsays"? Is that the same as "fiancé's"?

calling in news agencies is only going to make it worse for the kids.
they only care about hyping a story for their own good.
best you can do is complain to whatever agency controls the schools, where I live it is called the "Board of Education".
whatever that agency is complain to them.
if it does no good, then cut your loses and enroll him in another school and move on for the kids sake.

I think you could go to the media with it -- especially if its a smaller community, they'd definitely pick it up. First of all, he's saying "I wish", not "I'm going to kill", so I would file that under freedom of speech.

Second of all, when did schools start policing the internet? Seems a little out of their jurisdiction (yes, even though it involves a principal) -- especially if it was posted from a home computer rather than a school PC.

I think parents need to get back to their job of parenting, not making the school responsible for every little thing. There's a certain point where the power of the school authorities ends and the parental power should begin.

I can understand someone who dosnt know how this "interweb" thingy works getting upset. It really has changed the rules a bit.

Imagine if you said to me "*insert whore here* wants to kill me" Id laugh in your face and tell you thats its ok he wants kill everyone, dont worry about it.

Now imagine if your granny said to you "some guy says he is going to kill me" - its very different.
