What would happen if whites started WET like Blacks did BET?
 

Would there be any issues? I'm watching BET right now and was just thinking about the ramifications. BTW, I am not racist in anyway but the double standards kind of make me chuckle... am I wrong?

This is a valid point. While I did use to make the exact same comment/joke I had never really watched BET. When you take the time to watch you realize that it does reflect a culture and attitude not present in most programs which are predominantly white. For instance on Sunday Mornings I will often flip over to BET where they usually have a couple hours of Gospel Music, and I just can't get enough Gospel Music for some reason, all the hands clapping yelling and praising...I'm not that religious by any stretch of the word but it always puts me in a good mood. You will find alot of Music Videos that MTV does not even consider putting on the air. Their Sitcom and Drama based Television also portrays a culture, attitude and specific situations that you will not find in Network TV. You do see a good number of african american based sitcom's on the WB and UPN, but nothing much more than that I believe. So I guess I have come to see the validity behind the channel, even though I still find humor in the name.

The Golf Channel = WET

Because most white people have no backbone and most people dont stand up for there rights. Blacks, woman and even gays have more backbone then most White males

Everytime they have one someone gets shot or there is a big fight. You have to have a bullet proof vest to goto the 'Source Magazine' awards, there is always a fight there.

i find it funny that a lot of black people pull the slavery card, but fact remains, only about 5% of all slaves came to america....slavery was not as present here as some people make it out to be

Those networks are not centered around race nor are black people excluded from those networks. Nothing short of WET is equivalent to BET.

I'd watch it, just to see all of my favorite minorty acted commercials, done by white people.

BET was created out of neccecssity. It is a vehicle for black artists to express themselves. Calling BET reverse racism is like calling UNIVISION or TELEMUNDO the same becuase they broadcast Hispanic enteratinment targeted at STRICTLY a Hispanic audience.

And lets not forget its owned by Viacom....not a bunch of honky hating niggas.

Univision is in spanish.

Yup but both Telemundo and Univision are based out of the United States and clearly target the Spanish demographic. And though the stations name isn't SET...it mind as well be.

Programs like Friends, Will and Grace and countless others all target a certain demographic. It's done in the content, jokes, writing, advertising, set pieces, clothing, culture. 18-35 white males and females. If that is not discrimiinative practices I don't know what is.

You guys are looking into this way too much. If BET wasn't called BET it would be just another UPN or WB but with music.

And for the record I don't agree with BET's programming choices and the way it perpetuates racial stereotypes....so its crap anyways.

I see your point regarding spanish language television produced in the U.S. but I don't agree 100%. Targeting a demographic seperated by language is different than catering to a demo that simply wants to identify by race. BET being crap for perpetuating bling and booty stereotypes I agree with.
