Your wishlist for Link Exchange script features

ive hacked so many changes into linkxxxchange, but its starting to not be worth it because of lxc's basic flaws and the fact that it looks like theyve stopped developing/supporting it. i really find it hard to believe that there are not better link exchange scripts out there when you consider how important mutual links are.

so as an xmas present to cheap ass webmasters, ive decided to do a full rewrite. the price will be a link back to my site.

post your feature wishlist to this thread.

Features ive hacked in and will keep:
- removed requirement for register_globals in php.ini
- administrative recip link verification (not just on creation)
- real templating (not just line break or break tags)
- admins can easily enter link html when adding links

Ideas for further features:
- record link adders email for notification of link delete/change
- allow link adders to supply full html for their link
- anti-abuse features
- automatic mutual deletion

do any of these sound good? more ideas?

:thumbsup saw your reply in my thread :thumbsup
I'd like to try this script when it's ready.

I was working on one that supports categories (and sub/super categories, also multiple categories per link), unlimited different pages, counting incoming hits by referer and ranking according to that, ranking/listing linktrades according to pagerank, email notifications on new links, the option to require activation before links become active, and some other things.
If you could add those features to a script, that'd be great. Would save me the trouble of having to do it myself :thumbsup

sounds like you are headed toward a full traffic management script. dynamcially changing rankings is a good idea and definiately doable, but i think something like that would have to require sql databasing because of the performace hit involved with reshuffling and rewriting data on every request. maybe make it an option on top of the basic script.

i think administrative approval and email notification are must haves. multiple, n-depth categories would be pretty easy to represent too.

are you writing from scratch, or modifying another script? are you still actively developing it, and can i take a look at what youve got?

Yeah, it's slowly getting to be a complete trading script, but one with more of an empasis on hardlink trading and multiple pages than on skimming. The backend is indeed a database, counting hits is optional, and what I have so far supports both generation of static files as well as dynamic files.

I'm writing from scratch, but I developed several fully functional trading/traffic management scripts before, so I have experience to work with.

I still don't know whether I'll keep it private, GPL it or release a shareware version, so no looks at the script just yet :winkwink:

A script like this isn't really all that much work though... a few days of work should be enough to create something with all the features you could ever need.

I think what I wanted is already covered, per your response in my thread.

I'd like to be able to nest single link in a table cell & have script create new cells as links are added.

A nice feature would be the target tag, if I could select option to have links have target="_blank" or target="_new", that would be sweet.

Since this has an empasis on hardlink trading do actually hit counters do any good as a ranking measure?

Hits, to a certain degree, represent the quality of the link to your site (assuming you only get traffic from that hardlink). A good textlink, one in a relevant place on a site and without much competition from other links, gets more hits than a bad textlink. That, and it is likely that a site with a decent amount of traffic is a more valuable link partner.
In my opinion, a good way to rank sites would be by something like hits*pagerank*tilt (where tilt is a number assigned to linktrades based on their number of backlinks, apparent relevance, etc).

Aside from that, I think that it would probably be good not to forget that traffic provided by link trades may still convert, especially with the traffic being non-blind :winkwink:
