would you view war as a method of population control ?

discuss

birth control, contraception, and abortion are all methods of population control

why wouldnt war be considered one?

Harmon 12-19-2005 06:21 PM

I suppose so... but more like "thinning the herd..."

Not killing to just elimintae the amount of people. Like they say, "Survival of the fittest..."

Alex 12-19-2005 06:22 PM

Of course.

Have you ever read of some of Thomas Malthus' work?

nope, why do you ask...

Rob 12-19-2005 06:24 PM

AIDS is a form of population control that is only supposed to thin out the "dregs" of society. Drug users, homosexuals, etc.

War is just a little more selective of a method. :2 cents:

That would be true 30 years ago.

If it's a large scale warfare then I guess it could somehow affect the rate of population growth..

sfera 12-19-2005 10:06 PM

i would say so

klinton 12-19-2005 10:59 PM

took my answer

As far as war goes.....yes it is a form of population control along with famine, disease BUT...war is a very poor form of population control.

Bluewire Ross 12-19-2005 11:16 PM

If you think that War is a good tool for population control, you should be the first casualty. That idea is unacceptable.

je_rome 12-19-2005 11:18 PM

epidemic. that's nature's way of balancing the population

Dirty Dane 12-19-2005 11:19 PM

I think Hitler did

right...ok..

war is a perfect form of population control. population control is good so we dont overpopulate ourselves. its a necessity.

if we didnt have war, abortion, miscarriages, suicide, murder, etc. think about how many MORE people would be on this planet..

Pretty dumb actually. At least current wars. Think total in Iraq is 32,000 including our troops. We lose more than that in 6 month or so in car crashes.

ilsoph 12-20-2005 12:18 AM

imo, war technically isn't population control assuming the factions follow the geneva convention... and these days with strategic strikes to factories, airstripes, radar towers, etc the idea is to blind, mute and deafen the enemy.. not to kill them.. wars are typically won and lost with less than 1% casualty rate to the population.. another example that comes to mind regarding geneva convention preserving lives and casualties is the use of jacketed bullets, etc..

hitler and genocide is a differnet story of course, and pre-geneva..

Bluewire Ross 12-20-2005 12:26 AM

war happened for a reason (sometime, a stupid one)
