Tom Cruise Named Biggest Movie Star Of All Time; LOTR named Favorite Film Franchise

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/4564944.stm

Tom Cruise has been named the biggest movie star of all time, but also the most irritating, by film fans.

Cruise 'irritates most' say fans

An Empire magazine poll of 10,000 movie fans named Cruise the biggest star, beating Robert De Niro and Marilyn Monroe among others.

Kate Winslet and Kevin Spacey took the favourite actress and actor titles.

Cruise's status as most irritating actor "may be a knee-jerk reaction to his year in the spotlight", said Empire assistant editor Ian Freer.

Scientology beliefs

While promoting latest film War of the Worlds earlier this year, Cruise announced he was engaged to Dawson's Creek star Katie Holmes. The pair are now expecting a baby.

Cruise also spoke of his belief in Scientology and criticised actress Brooke Shields, who had admitted taking drugs for post-natal depression.

He beat Jennifer Lopez, Julia Roberts, Adam Sandler and Jim Carrey in the most irritating actor category.

But Mr Freer added: "He has also been voted the greatest movie star in the world, something this year's Mission: Impossible 3 will no doubt confirm."

The poll was commissioned to mark Empire magazine's 200th issue.

In the acting categories Finding Neverland star Winslet beat Nicole Kidman and Natalie Portman while American Beauty star Spacey beat Tom Hanks and Johnny Depp among others.

Steven Spielberg was best director, beating King Kong film-maker Peter Jackson - nevertheless Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy was named favourite film franchise.

Film fans named Fargo star Steve Buscemi their favourite unsung movie hero.

Seven out of 10 of those questioned thought there was too much product placement in films, while 81% thought there were too many sequels and remakes.

gangbangjoe 12-29-2005 01:35 PM

i hate him and all this scientologycrap

Babagirls 12-29-2005 01:36 PM

i love Marilyn Monroe and love how she did everything she could do to be in movies to pursue her dreams but i dont think she should be on that particular list. i dunno, just my opinion ::shrugs::

Kevin Spacey is one of my fav actors, glad to see him and Kate Winslet get the favorite actress and actor titles.

I think they got it right, he's the most well known - and he's a jerk.

BigCashCrew 12-29-2005 01:38 PM

I cannot stand to watch 10 minutes of any move Tom Cruise is in. For some reason I get annoyed as fuck. I went to see War Of The Worlds and couldn't stand it after the first 20 minutes.

smack 12-29-2005 01:39 PM

tom cruise is a tool in prick's clothing.

Michaelious 12-29-2005 01:44 PM

Cruise biggest actor?? :error

dunefield 12-29-2005 01:45 PM

Tricksy 12-29-2005 01:49 PM

I don't like his acting at all...

pornguy 12-29-2005 01:51 PM

I dont see tom in that list either. H Ford is 10 times better.

aimeesweet 12-29-2005 03:05 PM

I can't stand him...

TheLegacy 12-29-2005 03:26 PM

remember most who filled out the form have computers therefore are a younger crowd - so they probably havent seen any movie before Back To The Future to know of how great real actors were... so this doesnt suprise me.

CDSmith 12-29-2005 04:33 PM

Other actors that should be on that list before Cruise are:

John Wayne
Humphrey Bogart
anyone with the last name "Hepburn"

thank you, that is all.

woj 12-29-2005 04:57 PM

heh, I don't think he should be in the top 10...

Barefootsies 12-29-2005 05:29 PM

He might be the biggest box office star, but surely not best actor. He has not developed as an actor over time like the greats. He is the same overrated p.o.s. he's been for the last 20 years.

Collataral was a good movie, except for one thing. Cruise. He was hardly believable in the role, and as for acting skills. Watch the last 10 minutes when he is shot. Oh yeah, I would shrug too if shot through the liver. Shesh.

This list can go on and on ripping his movies apart, but since I watched that one most recently, that will be where it ends.

I agree with some other's comments. The list is leaving out the greats, and seem more focused on the contemoraries.

:disgust

seeric 12-29-2005 05:30 PM

i think they need to swap number 1 with mnumber 4 and vice versa.

gornyhuy 12-29-2005 06:06 PM

Thats bullshit. he sucks and he can't wipe the ass of the big boys.

Vitasoy 12-30-2005 01:32 AM

Tom Cruise? You got to be kidding me

wedouglas 12-30-2005 01:38 AM

Interesting. I have respect for Cruise. He may be a little odd, but I think he is up there. Regardless of the roles he picks and his acting ability, he is in more blockbuster films than anyone else and is proably the most well known actor in the entire world.

Its easy to see why is one of the biggest movie star of all time.

Spielberg is an obvious choice also. Jackson couldn't possibly be. He hasn't done enough yet. LOTR was amazing, but Spielberg has way more films under his belt, many of which are also amazing.

Now thats fucked up!

when did Cruise go from asshole to actor?

he ruined movies that otherwise would have been good.

Great, wedouglas. Am going to give it a shot when it opens in wide release in early January. I want to see another good movie for the xmas/new years season. So far I have seen "King Kong" which was brilliant, and "Narnia" which was really mediocre and disappointing as I thought it'd be better. "The Ringer" could also be quite funny so I'll give that a shot. "Capote" looks like it'll be good, and then, of course, "Munich."

Tom Cruise gets spooged in the face!

Tom Cruise explains his knowledge of mind!

I like what he says in the interview:

"There's no such thing as a chemical imbalance in the body."

:1orglaugh

Ah Tom, stick to acting and shitcan that scientology nonsense.

If any of you havent seen the scientology episode of SouthPark I highly recommend it. I havent belly laughed like that in a long time. Best part of it is Stan offends Tom by telling him he isnt as good as the guy who played Napolean Dynamite, but he is ok.. Then Tom opens the closet door and goes in and locks himself inside. The rest of the episode has the phrase "Tom Cruise wont come out of the closet!!" Good stuff. :thumbsup :thumbsup :1orglaugh :1orglaugh

is there a scientologist on GFY who will come to Tom's defense? if so please come forward.

WebairGerard 12-30-2005 12:51 PM

He is not even in the top 100 best actors of all time! Go figure!

Doctor Dre 12-30-2005 12:56 PM

He's good but I don't think he deserves that ... Tom Hanks and Leonardo DeCaprio didn't even make the cut ...

Doctor Dre 12-30-2005 12:57 PM

I agree with the 3 next ones thought ;) great actors

I agree with a lot of those choices too, like LOTR as the best movie franchise as I think thats bang-on, and DeNiro and Spielberg being up there in their categories, but I think the consensus is IS that Cruise is not the biggest movie star of all time.

dig420 12-30-2005 01:07 PM

Marlon Brando, James Dean, Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney, Cary Grant...

Tom Cruise has the greatest PR guy of all time.

"best" is clearly a relative term.

Let's not forget about Top Gun, the movie everyone has seen.

I had to throw it in here, because I love the volleyball scene, meowww!

I think he is a good actor, but not the best. I'am all about Viggo Mortensen (growl)
