its part of a dispute that has been going on for over a fucking decade with Ukraine refusing to pay market prices. they wanted their independence, they got it... if they want gas, they have to actually pay for it now.

you are reading it wrong. the current market value is $230 which russia wants them to pay. they arent asking them to pay 4x what others pay.

I understand that $220-$230 is the market price. My main point of contention is that the Ukraine is locked in at $50 until 2009, but are willing to negotiate up prior to the expiration. Gazprom (Putin) is not willing and taking a hard line.

The Ukraine government claim they have enough gas in reserve to last the winter.

Did they ever learn conclusively what caused it? I recall the story and photos at the time, but never heard for sure what exactly happened.

I remember that ! Did he ever recover at all from what they did to him? Or does he still look that way? I know there will obviously be some scarring, but did it ever improve at all?
