Well it's time to say goodbye shes dying..

My first ever Athlon XP pc served me for 3years. xp2000+

The CPU temp is running at 80-82'c 177-179'sF 181'F

The pc keeps locking up I swaped the PC fans from the thermalTake to the OEM model didn't help. Time to backup files =)

Pete-KT 01-03-2006 06:13 AM

good luck in the move, i found a program that copies all your software and settings from the old computer to the new one, very helpful when I bought the new laptop

Maybe it had a trojan installed on it and some fuckhead has a mirror of your whole harddrive somewhere.

Rico 01-03-2006 04:22 PM

Use at least a few parts if you build a new machine. It is good luck to keep her around ;)

Bluewire Ross 01-03-2006 04:23 PM

same thing happened to me last year!got a new one....

candyflip 01-03-2006 04:26 PM

Must be some super secret program the owner doesn't want to sell and make money from. :1orglaugh

I am running on a desktop that I bought about 4 years ago. Had to replace the fan, the powersupply, and the box. It is old, and somewhat slow, but it gets the job done.

Sounds like a hopeless case. RIP to your Athlon XP.

biftek 01-03-2006 07:36 PM

have you re-applied any heat sink compound ? the stuff that was on there has probably dried up , if you have that sticker stuff that hsf's come with , rip it off , use some alcohol to get rid of the crap that gets left behind and apply some heat sink compound like artic silver

biftek 01-03-2006 08:52 PM

a pc doesn't slowly die , it either dies or keeps going , the only thing on a computer that will slowly die is a hard drive due to the moving parts , cpu, ram, motherboard are all electrical so as i said if it was going to die you'd wake up one morning it wont switch on , there will be signs of it being on its death bed

you'll know if its the hard drive karking it as it would be making clunking noises

I just installed the third power supply on my old Athlon 900 box that I built 4+ years ago. After numerous upgrades/ component changes, that old Thunderbird is still chugging along.

The box runs my bedroom TV/surround sound.. runs 24 hrs a day.

Yeah thats why I took off my thermaltake CPU fan and swaped it with the OEM brandnew I am gonna pickup some grease.. I had it over clocked a little bit hardly anything at all (all bios) Now I set everything way back and I am still getting 67's C -73'C

AdultEUhost 01-03-2006 09:40 PM

How's your cpu resrources? Is somehting running it into high usage? Constant usage can cause insane temps on that chip.

chaze 01-03-2006 11:29 PM

Disk back up software for windows sucks, there is nothing really solid from what I hear.

:disgust

Just back up psd, favorites, desktop, DW, password protector, and re-install the rest.

there's your problem , the heat sink and chip aren't making a good enough contact for heat exchange

if you were desperate enough you could even use toothpaste to fill the gaps between the heatsink and chip ( just means that you would have to reapply quite frequently )
